Gear Question

i know another gear question. :eyes rolling: first i have no intent on doing this but for the sake of argument.

i had a JT MT6 with 3.73 gears, moved up in tire size to 315's, was a dog driving so i jumped to 4.88. my thoughts were i went to deep in the gearing for the 315's but drove much better. just traded it in on a 24 JL sport s with auto trans so my new gears are 3.43? i still have the 3.73's sitting on the floor of my garage would there be any point of doing this swap? just a small difference in ratio. would it be just a waste of time and money, even though the gears are free?

again don't think it's something I'm actually going to do, mostly bringing it for conversation.

Total waste of time. IMHO 4.88s would be overkill, I'm putting 4.56 gears in my 6MT and absolutely love it and can't wait to get bigger tires. If I was sticking with factory sized tires on my manual, I'd have probably put in 4.10's like the Rubicon has.

Total waste of time. IMHO 4.88s would be overkill, I'm putting 4.56 gears in my 6MT and absolutely love it and can't wait to get bigger tires. If I was sticking with factory sized tires on my manual, I'd have probably put in 4.10's like the Rubicon has.

Having gone off the deep end (pun intended), I love 4.56 with 32" tires. I will eventually go 33" with that gearing. At 35" tires I would do 4.88 and for 37s I would do 5.13. I'm not sure with this manual that you can go too deep unless you like to cruise 85 MPH (I stick to 70).

Setting up used gears is tricky. It's almost impossible to find a shop that will do it. And those that do don't warranty the work.

Also, going 3.45 to 3.73 is such a small difference you won't notice the change so it's really a waste of money.

Honestly, those 3.73s are basically scrap.

Now, to be self serving, I'm going to be making a video later this year and I'd like to have a bunch of different ratios from JL axles and I don't have 3.73s yet. I want to show side by side comparisons between them. If you'd be willing to put the gears in a box and ship them to me I'd be willing to toss you some money over PayPal or Venmo.

I’m not new to the off-road world. I pretty much knew the answer when I asked it was more of a start a conversation type thing. With that said I would be interested in shipping them. Only thing I was really thinking about was chopping the ring in half and welding it into something. Maybe feet for a stand?

i am new to the 24 jeep. Which does seem to have a few differences. And a lot more computer stuff compared to the TJ which is my off-roader
