Got my gears done 4.88 Yukon. Im working on breaking them in. Shop that did them is reputable and known for doing gears. Im getting a light buzz above 40mph. Its hard to explain but its clear. Changes a little bit in frequency as you go faster But does not get louder or pulse when you let off the accelerator. Some guys say gears make a little noise, other say they should be quiet. Should I be worried.
Also since these have the fad, do I have to worry about breaking in the front? should I put it in 4 hi while breaking in?
Thanks

I'd have to wonder if it's actually your gears. When you let off the accelerator you're on the coast side of the teeth and I'd expect a change. Everything from your pinion back to your transmission is now spinning faster, though, and that might contribute to your problem. It's just so hard to say from far away over a keyboard.

Front break-in isn't a bad idea if you can do it.

Good for you for being conscientious about break-in, it's important!!

Well you were right. It was bothering me too much. So I tucked away my pride and it took it back to the shop for a barely noticeable noise. Happy I did. They found the issue in the rear and looks like it was a defective piece that wasn’t machined correctly. Should be up and running today. Goes to show if you get gears done on a Jeep. There should be no new noise

They do change and inspection at 500 miles at 500 miles. After that it’s normal mop at intervals. No clue what oil they use

So what piece was defective and not machined properly?

Some inner bearing component. Said he needed to take apart about half of the rear to get there

You should give the shop owner some positive feedback. Unfortunately, doing things right seems rare today. Most shops would tell you the noise is normal and send you on your way.

Agreed. That’s why I paid more to go this shop. I felt bad as I know it eats his profit and he just said it’s part of the territory. In this case it was not his fault. But he still had to eat 4 hours of shop time.
