I just got an email from Gaia letting me know they are increasing their price starting June 6, 2024. It's going from $39.99 to $59.99. Not sure how I feel about this. I do like Gaia but the app is buggy as hell and I don't know if the $20 increase is warranted but I guess the alternative is getting lost so maybe it is worth that price.

One one hand it's only $20 more a year but on the other hand I'm tired of every company increasing prices by 50% without making any changes to the product.

Just curious if anyone else is on the fence about renewing or if I'm just being an old man yelling at clouds.

I got tired of the bugginess of Gaia. I'm using OnX Offroad now. I think the features of Gaia were better. I won't be renewing Gaia when my current subscription expires.

I have always preferred Gaia over onx as my tablet mounted in the rig gets no data coverage. But seems OnX has invested into all the youtubers and such. This will continue to get market share which could translate into further forward development.

With prices increasing, not sure what route I will take in the future (no puns).

I was never smart enough to properly use Gaia properly so I like onX the best and only use it.;)

My major problem with Gaia (besides their shady data-mining of user personal data after the Outside acquisition) is that the offline maps took forever to download, even with the app open and the device plugged in. Like multiple days -- you'd constantly have to restart the download process and it was never clear how fast the downloads were going or what was going on.

On the other hand, Gaia can store the map data on an SD card which onX can't do, but I've let my Gaia subscription lapse and just use OnX by only downloading a needed subset of the maps to the tablet's internal storage.

I will also say that Gaia has more flexibility with the various available layers, but I haven't been able to find a combination of them that is as handy all-around as the OnX map.

You do know that OnX also supports offline maps?

Agreed. Tried Gaia when I got my first Jeep and it was way too complex.

Then I used OnX for a couple years. Now I'm using TrailsOffRoad and OnX only to track my runs.

I’m on the fence. I’m annoyed, I feel held hostage with my tracks I’ve made and the ones I’ve uploaded over the years. I guess that’s where they think they have leverage. I’m not sure about OnX and I don’t know if there’s another decent alternative.

You can export them as GPX files and reimport into most other mapping apps. Its a pain if you have a bunch, but you can move it to something else.

I was an early adopter of Gaia back in 2017. I sung their praises to all looking for a trail mapping system. I still use it. But they have fallen behind technologically. There are simply too many places where their system does not properly integrate or it just does not work as we would expect of a mapping system in 2024. I agree with the point on downloads. But what is worse is how their system architecture stores and presents the data we record for tracks and routes. Searches and indexes for map features are not always functional.

Before Gaia was sold to Outside magazine company, I could tell that they were needing help. But I am very disappointed in Outside ownership. Rather than rebuilding the core systems to eliminate the glitchyness, they used Gaia as a marketing tool for their other products. I get daily emails from them associated with my use of Gaia, almost like our only purpose is so that they can data mine us.

They have made a few improvements though. It used to be that if you created a route, your route would lay over the information below, like trail names and numbers. This seems to be fixed.

If Outside is listening, rethink cross marketing your other products and put some serious money into reprogramming your core systems in Gaia. It is 2024 and we have much greater expectation from your ownership. Your other products will get more respect if you do.
