I have a small amount of surface rust on my frame that I want to clean up before winter. I was thinking hit it with a wire brush, or a wire wheel on a grinder, to clear it off then add some rustoleum over the whole thing. This sound about right? Anything else I should consider? Thanks!

Might I recommend Herculiner.

It's a little more expensive than Rust-Oleum, but it will last 20 times longer. Rustoleum you'll have to respray it every few months, but if you use Herculiner, you won't have to spray it but once every couple of years if that.

1 and 1/2 cans did my whole hood, and I did three coats/layers.

It's not thick and chunky like some truck bed liner sprays, it's thin and hard and sticks really well even without primer. In fact I've literally never used a primer with it. Including on my hood. Just make sure you clean the surface really well before you spray it so it sticks well.

I had cut off a piece of steel which the sway bar end link connects to on the passenger side of the axle, and was using rustoleum to keep the rust away. I was spraying it every 2 months or less. My dad finally recommended Herculiner, and I sprayed that on there this past March, and haven't had to use anything since.

Herculiner is definitely longer lasting and honestly better quality than rustoleum. I would stay away from rustoleum if you're trying to keep rust away.

Get yourself some 60% concentrate phosphoric acid mixed with 5% ethyl alcohol. Spray/brush on your rust and leave it alone for 24 hours. Be aware that this will discolor the paint around the rust so dont spread it beyond the area you are treating. Clean it off and then paint. Follow up with PB Blaster Surface Shield or Fluid Film.

Nope. Get yourself some "fluid film" off of amazon and coat it and the whole frame
Wire wheel, paint, and fluid film seem like the way.

The debate seems to be herculiner vs por15. And rustoleum being least desirable. I’ll look into both a bit more. I’m thinking of adding frame mounted rock sliders which may need frame drilling so maybe herculiner for now then por15.

Do both stick to the factory frame paint as is or I need to scuff it up? There’s only a few rusty weld spots not the whole thing.

Thanks all for your help.

Will definitely look into these. This takes the place of a wire wheel or wire wheel then do this?

Yes. It will penetrate into every nook and cranny. Will also displace any moisture
