Ever since I got my JLU, I've been trying to figure out a mounting solution to carry my 30" long Cold Steel Spetsnaz Trench Shovel (the longer one, they don't sell a matching sheath like the small version).

At the beginning, I secured it to the top of the sport cage using two bull straps from Bartact. It works but hard to reach and remount. I also don't want to get the law enforcement officer's attention after I take the top off during summer. Another reason is for safety because I can't find a matching sheath to cover the sharp edges.

Later I bought the Fishbone Offroad Tub Rail Tie Downs for the trunk, and started thinking about mounting the shovel on the side with reusable zip ties. It works.

Recently I came across this beautiful leather sheath made for this Cold Steel long/bigger shovel, I was so happy. And also bought a pair of NRS micro straps rather than using reusable zip ties.

I’ve been wanting to get a small shovel to carry in the Jeep and this looks about perfect. I went to the Cold Steel website just now and the shovel is only $40, and the cover for it is $9, although the cover doesn’t look as sturdy as the one in your pictures. might I ask where you found your shovel cover?

Cold Steel has two shovels, the short one has a matching sheath. This 30" longer/bigger one that I have, they don't make a matching cover. I spent a lot time searching for one.

I'd suggest you to decide if you like the short one or long one, there are tons of videos on youtube talking about the short one, used by many campers and for survival. Lighter and easier to carry around. The main reason I chose the longer one is because the head a bit larger and I like the long handle to save my back when I need to use it. You can also chop tree branches and use it as a self-defense tool.

Back to the cover for the long version. John from Long Branch Leather made this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/155798345775?hash=item24464e182f:g:nc0AAOSw~mhlFFNQ

This Nylon cover from Marble Knives also fits, one reviewer posted some pics too: https://www.amazon.com/Firemans-Machete-Construction-Embroidered-Marbles/dp/B004GEGL40

Matt from Grizzly Outdoors also makes Kydex version for both the short and long shovel: https://www.grizzly-outdoors.com/cold-steel-special-forces-shovel-sheath/

The leather sheath is a perfect fit and very elegant.

Hi @Fast-n-Furious :

In the last picture of your original post of this thread what circular foam did you use at each end of the shovel to secure it to the Fishbone Offroad Tub Rail Tie Downs with the NRS micro straps?

Was it just segments of big box store pipe insulation?

Those tub rails are great. With the 2 door it's a little tricky because you have to drill some holes in them to be able to mount them. My shovel also wouldn't fit with the handle towards the front so I had to flip mine around and mount the rail upside down.

The rails also come in handy if you need to mount up a set of emergency flip flops:

It’s not the regular poly foam pipe insulation. It’s softer and denser. I recycled them from some previous packages. Has been using them as cushion between my hardtop and hoist strap. They hold very well.

The regular pipe insulation should work well too, even a small towel.

Great! Yea I tried with Quick Fist clamps too, it'll work better if my shovel handle is bigger diameter.

I still have the other side of the tub rail available, been thinking about what to mount there.

My issue with the Quick Fist was that the larger one was too small for the thicker part of the handle. I had to use a medium sized and attach the lower part of the handle like sideways. Not ideal but I tried all configurations and this worked out the best for this particular shovel.

For now, besides the flip flops, I have nothing really mounted to the other one. I installed it thinking at some point I'd need to mount something.
