I'm running a 'no metal' setup with a soft shackle - you have to cut and re-splice the end if you want to get rid of the thimble.

Thats what I was thinking as well I just hadnt taken it off yet to see if something wonky was going on.

Fancy, pretty colored, machined aluminum winch rope ends are a waste of money. But they look cool. It's like they set out to use a CNC mill to make something nobody needs, but everyone will want. I owned a machine shop at one time. Finding work is a real issue. I get it. But this is clearly a product designed to separate your money from you. By the way, I have one of these aluminum doohickeys on my winch rope. It's also an attractive nuisance. If someone likes it well enough, a simple flip of your winch shift lever and a pocket knife will grant him his wish.

If your winch has a synthetic rope and you use soft shackles (if you intend to use the winch), then just having a loop at the end of the winch rope is sufficient and likely much safer. When I get around to it, I'm dumping my aluminum end.

I don't know how the factory Warn winch made, but I discarded the Warn hook on my newish 10K winch for part from Amazon. I like it because it lays flat against the bumper and it came with rubber pads to protect the fairlead finish. I love everything about the Factor 55 gear but the price.

Just don't put a soft shackle directly in that. The corners of the hole are not radiused for a soft shackle and will damage synthetic rope. Use a steel anchor shackle then the soft shackle

Thanks for all the info guys. I am still learning here. Never had a winch. Just making sure nothing funky is going on with the factory one since Warn told me directly they didnt make a hook to fit it. I asked why it wouldnt fit but I am still waiting to hear back from them

The Masterpull winch puck is plastic and costs about $25. That and the cost of a Factor 55 fast fid and you can eliminate one more potential projectile in the winching equation.

I had contacted Warn on fb and with email. The email said the Epic hook wouldn't fit and the Facebook messenger customer support said it would. Interesting. I went ahead and ordered it so give it a shot. I doubt this thing sees much winching at the mall lol I mainly just wanted something prettier

That Masterpull piece is definitely interesting, I like the idea of removing the thimble.

Just to throw another option out there. We've got the Mile Marker Winch Shackle Mount 60-12166, which is simply a rubber cover for the thimble, I always liked the idea of getting rid of the extra connection there.

This is my plan, except I'm going to get the yankum fairlead so I can just hook the end of the line on the fairlead. Seems like a clean simple setup.

Still haven't decided on a synthetic winchline brand though.
