I just went from the Non Etorque V6 to the Etorque. Its a very noticeable difference in smooth operating and overall functionality of the ESS.eTorque is certainly complicated.
And, let me state for the record that almost all of us would prefer not to have auto start/stop.
But if we must have auto start/stop, isn’t a belt-start generator the best solution? And if we have a BSG, then isn’t a separate 48v battery the best solution? And while we have that 48v battery, why not add transmission smoothing and all the other benefits of eTorque?
Having driven eTorque and 12v ESS, eTorque is night-and-day smoother and better. It’s not even close.
So I guess what I’m saying is that eTorque seems like the best solution for a dumb, mandatory “fuel saving” feature. Is it complicated? Yes. Does it work very well in practice? Also yes.
I actually considered the 2.0 because it had ESS. The ESS is easy to bypass and doesn't have coolant lines for the battery. Once bypassed you have a one battery vehicle again. Simple. Thanks, looks good
Too bad they dumped it off the 2.0 almost as soon as they started, woulda been nicer than the start/stop crap but.... oh well![]()
Oddly I now wish I had it in my Ram as the traffic lights are now "forever lights" around here and mpg draws down quickly - the Hemi thing doesn't help - lolI actually considered the 2.0 because it had ESS.
