I got a new JLU with ESS. I realized it works sometimes, but not always. Most of the times it doesn’t work when I fully stop the car and other times it does. Does it have some kind of special feature that I’m not aware of? I never turn it off using the dash button.

If you scroll down in the dash display there is a page dedicated to the ESS status, it will tell you exactly why it's not engaged. Most common would be cabin heating/cooling. Also stuff like steering angle too sharp.

Mark,

Refer to the JL owners manual. It's described pretty well in there.

It’s weird. Mine works sometimes, but it doesn’t correlate to the possible reasons listed above and I don’t have an alert signal on my dashboard saying something is wrong

Mark,

Did you scroll through your cluster EVIC and notice what the Stop/Start page indicates?

There is a cluster indicator with a capital A, sort of a circle around it with an arrow, just like at the very top of the User Owner's page I included. This one lights up when the ESS is active (and turns the engine off). There is an almost identical indicator, same as just described but with a line through it for when the Engine Controller detects an electrical problem with the ESS circuitry. If neither indicator is on then it must be one of the dynamic conditions listed above. Your EVIC page will show this condition.
