I have a 2018 2.0 and notice at times, when sitting in line at bank, I hear a tapping like you used to hear when a lifter was out of adjustment. Thing is when I stand outside Jeep I don’t hear it.
Sometimes the thumping noises can come from the ventilation system. If you have the air conditioning or heating on while you wait, the compressed air or wind generated inside the cabin may be making noises that sound like mechanical noises.
I noticed my 2020 Sport-S with the 2.0L engine was getting noisier. Turns out that the timing chain tensioner was bad (common problem with these motors) and ended up getting it replaced under warranty (almost $3,000 worth of work). They ended up putting the same OEM tensioner back in. I told the dealer's service center mechanic I'd see him again in another 45,000 miles for the same problem. In reality though when this one goes out it'll be out of warranty and I'll go with a stronger tensioner.
