I usually have a larger (5lbs I believe) fire extinguisher in the Jeep but haven’t found a decent mount for it. Also twice now I’ve let them go way past their expiration or recharge or whatever it’s called date. The hip new thing seems to be the element fire sticks because of their size, available mounts and lack of expiration date.

My concern is the negative reviews online; obviously this is one area where the conveniences mean nothing if they don’t work when needed. I have a diesel and have seen what happens when they catch fire. Anyone have any real world experience with the Elements?

I carry both the traditional extinguisher mounted on the rear pillar on my 2dr. Both stay put top on or off. Quick access and a backup is most important in my mind...

The element is mounted above the driver window giving me access from inside, and outside with window down...

Curious but don’t those mounts interfere with the airbags functioning in case of need?

The element isn’t the optimal answer. We keep an Element in the overhead molle panel over the front seats. Also 2 of the 2.5lb H3R halguard at the rear of the Jeep. As well as 4 gallons of water. Not trying to save the Jeep just to protect the people or things in or around the Jeep.

I thought standard fire extinguishers were generally good for 5 years or longer?

Possibly? I know the first one spent some time under the kitchen sink prior. I used it on a campfire in high winds and it was less than effective. Just checked the date on the replacement to that and it is past it's usable date too.

Extinguishers and first aid kits all mounted to the roll bar in the rear. Easy access and away from most potential fire areas.

I’m not sure I have airbags behind those panels. I have grab handles on both sides, I guess I better have a look.

Not 100% sure, but afaik only MY24+ has the new side curtain airbags (front and rear) built into the sport bar overhead, which has been a noted issue for certain grab handles, sunshades and other add-ons usually installed in that location.

That is my understanding but wanted to look onboard to be sure. Got sidetracked and still haven't wandered over and it is getting dark.

Absolutely. Better safe than sorry. Blindly taking the word of some goofy sumzabidges on the internet will be no consolation if you end up getting smacked in the noggin with your fire extinguisher! 👍

I also carry both. I don't expect either of them to do anything to save my Jeep if it starts burning down. Never hurts to have them though because you never know what you'll come across. Maybe it will come in handy one day at a campground or something.

...excellent point, but reinterpreted, they also can't work if a fire stands between you and your access to them: cannister or flare size alike.

I carry both: cannister in the cargo area and flare size Element near the console......

With insurance the way it is, only reason I'm using my extinguisher is to keep the fire off the brush/trees or save a life. I'm letting the jeep burn to the ground if it ignites itself.

So I had an extinguisher twice that size, I came around a mountain corner and there was a trailer next to a small 10 foot long brush fire, they were throwing cups of water on it. I jumped out with the extinguisher, and hit the edges so it wouldn't get bigger, and it gave me about 15 seconds of spray, about 30 feet long swath 2 foot wide, not much. It did stop the fire spreading into the forest.

I have a 3-stage system. Everyone that drives off road should have at least a 2 lb extinguisher in the vehicle. I keep mine in the back, year-round. I also keep a large fire blanket in the back. The blanket is more for other situations I may encounter, but it's always there nonetheless. The last is a can of fire spray (like Kidde, First-Alert or "ColdFire"). When I go off road, I keep it in the cup holder where I can reach it, otherwise, in the back seat. While I do like the Element, there's no way to "turn it off" once you decide to use it. This is why I prefer the spray.
