got my RC 2.5" spacer lift ordered and my teraflex shocks..just waiting for delivery of shocks & shipment of lift.
Like a good customer, I'v read through the instructions to familiarize myself with the install, and have a couple questions about bump stops:
1) what are they (explain as though I just crawled out from under a rock & haven't a clue about suspension...because it's true)
2) I was reading somewhere that there aer different size stops for 35's & 37's: I'm ASSUMING that the larger bump stops correspond to the larger tires?
3) it looks as though there's only one set of stops for front and rear with the kit, so I'm just going to assume that everything will work out ok

Fixing stupid....
Taller bump stops are to keep the tires out of the fenders when flexing.

depending upon the lift manufacturer, some will include 2 different height sets for sport vs rubicon because of the difference in fender heights.

some manufacturers include 2 different sets for a specific trim (i.e. rubicon) and the 2 sets are for different size tires just as you were suspecting.

Each corner of the suspension has a bump stop to limit the amount of up travel, or “wheel stuff”, of the wheel assembly. That’s all they do. Without them, or if they’re not the proper height, you could roll over a boulder or other obstacle and your wheel and associated suspension parts would be pushed upward until they hit your fender or body or frame.

1) In the front the bump stops are located inside your lower coil spring mount, and the white bumpers on top. In the rear the bump stops are on top of the axle housing with the white bumpers on top.
2) Yes, the larger tires on the same lift springs should have taller bump stops to keep from contacting the inner fender area
3)Yes, everything will work out ok, until it deosn't:) :)

The bumpstops are also there to keep your shocks from bottoming out, its always a good thing to do before new springs are installed (if you installed new longer shocks) to bring the shocks to full bottom out, and measure the distance between the upper bumper and where they strike the axle and add that much to it, keeping in mind that the rubber bumper will go almost completly flat upon a hard bottom out. Also a good idea to have the tires mounted while you bottom out the axle fully and check for clearance issues.
i run the least amount of bump I can get away with. It creates a better ride do to more uptravel.

like other have said it is a fixed safe upper travel limit for your axle, with the idea being the the bump stop (the white rubber thing in the front coil or near the rear coil on the fame) makes contact with the axle before anything else make contact with each other that shouldnt

thing that bump stops can correct:
  • tire rubbing inside the wheel well or the frame, this some that is in conjugation with the tire dimensions and wheel offset, so people will get different results depending on their combo
  • shocks fully compresses and now the weight of the jeep is ridding on the shocks internals
there are other less common reason, but basically you try to max out the suspension in each corner after you do a lift kit and and turn the steering wheel lock to lock make sure that you are on your bump stops and nothing touching or rubbing things it shouldnt.

The bump stop extensions are needed because you change the distance everything to relative to everything else after a lift so that distance between the bump stop and axle needs to be shortened to correct for that change.

You are doing a spacer lift and most bumpstop kits for 2.5" will do just fine for you

there are air bump stops which replace the rubber bump stop with a air piston that cushions the the upward travel, but unless you are doing high speed off road racing dont waste your time with these

for the opposite direction of axle travel, most of the time the binding of your joints or the shock fully extended will be what limits droop and those are good limit points, but there are for some that the coils will unseat before the those limits are reached, so in that case you look to get limit straps which looks like a seatbelt bolted between the axle and the frame and limit downward droop

Do I need to change my bump stops if I’m putting in Rubicon suspension on my sport? I’m running 33s. Also if I added a .5 spacer on top of the suspension swap would I still need new bumpstop
