My 2016 JK Rubicon had side airbags (they were optional - $495). Is Jeep taking a step backwards with the JL? Truth is, I just assumed they were standard by now, but members are touting them on the 392 as if they are a new offering. ???

Side airbags for the rear seat is the new thing that's being offered. They're standard on the front.

That $495 dollar option was only for front seat airbags located on the outboard part of the seat. New for 2024 model year Wranglers is side curtain airbags for front and second row. Until now, side curtain airbags have never been available for the Wrangler line.
