Does the Diesel have the same main battery as the gas-powered Wranglers? What is the deal with the 2nd battery (ESS?)? It seems hard to get to. Does it fail often?

The JK's battery was a traditional setup - cheap, and easy to replace. This is my first JL.

I ask because the desert heat absolutely kills batteries (and, just about everything else).

If you ordered a tow package whether on the diesel or the gasser (non eTorque), then you get the same 700 amp main battery with the 240 amp alternator. So I suppose the gas and diesel options use the same battery on non eTorgue versions.

I never had the aux battery fail on the JL in Vegas heat. But it did on the Jeep Grand Cherokee which my wife had in about two years. But she does short drives and highway occasionally. But even when it was failing, the worst impact was that ESS was not turning on. It remained in "Battery charging" mode for many days. But the dealer changed both the batteries.

I guess it depends on the driving habits too. I drive mostly highway so my batteries are in good shape.
