1st time, my jeep on a beach.

I felt ready; I have a winch, recovery gear, a sare tire, 3 jacks, block of wood, viair pump, tools, new rod & reel, bait, license, permit, aired down to 20 psi.

We entered somewhere near Hatters and stayed to the far right. I was following my friend in his Toyota Tundra. I could tell the sand was deep, it was slow moving, the tires wanted to spin. He didn't air down and almost immediately sank in the fresh, wind blown, powdery, 6" of sand. The wind was fierce! I stopped and walked over to see if I could offer any help, I noticed my tires where also deep in the sand. To my understanding he stopped and decided to shift into 4L but was having some difficulties shifting his new truck. I asked if he was in 4wd? He said I think so but when he throttled nothing was happening. He asked are the tires spinning? I said no, none of them are, they're not even trying. He did some more shifting with the 4x4 knob on the dash and hit the gas pedal, the rear end sank super fast! Stop, stop, stop! Its in 2wd. He did more 4H - 4L shifting, he said the instrument panel lit up like a xmax tree. This brought on the oh s**t look on my face, I could feel it. He turned off the truck and restarted it. The dash cleared, he successfully shifted into 4wd and was able to drive out of the deep, powder soft sand towards the beach. This isn't where I wanted to be, it made me a little nervous but it's where the sand was more firm or packed down, I don't know but that's where everyone else was driving.

I believe he may have shifted between 4H and 4L without being in neutral and his truck went into some kind of safe mode. His brand new MT Baja Boss AT tires did very well. My skinny, MT Geolanders did just fine too, I was impressed. After this little mishap it was all down hill. The fish were biting and everyone had a wonderful time and y'all were right, I'm glad I used my jeep! I can't wait to go back next year.

Witness me!

AWESOME! Glad to see you all had a good time. I bet if your buddy aired down, that woulda never happened. Those baja bosses were meant for the sand đź’Ż. Seems like great weather there now too. Now give it a good wash!

You write a heck of a story, I was on the edge of my seat when your friends truck wouldn’t go into 4H. Never been on that beach but have been on Florida beaches many times. I put into 4H or 4Auto, depending on if it’s my Rubicon or my wife’s and just take it easy. I’ve never come close to getting stuck. I had one time when I didn’t put into 4H and the ramp exiting the beach had gotten really sandy, dried out and torn up, my rear wheels start to spin a little, but just stopping and putting into 4H it made it out without even breathing hard.

Growing up on the Florida beaches most people got stuck when they went to close to the dunes. The sand is loose and gives really easy. You learned not to back In, keep your rear wheels closest to the packed sand and for goodness sakes don’t try and make a hard turn while backing out of your spot on the beach. Those front wheels end up plowing into the dirt and the rears just spin and dig a big hole.

Oh, and don’t leave your car parked down near the water and let the tide come in on you.

Happy Jeeping.

Sounds like your friend should've had a Toyota support group forum and asked the basic questions like you did on here.
We told you you'd love it!

I'll be down the week of the 15th in Carova, prob about an hour or so away from Nags head. Don't worry about getting stuck, there will be people around to pull you out, but 9 times out of 10, airing down should do the trick. Do it before you get on the beach. If my grand cherokee can do it, no doubt you should be fine. I have seen Subarus and Mazdas driving on the beach, in soft sand doing fine as well.

We will be in Corolla the same week. I will keep an eye out!

The man van hung out with the big dogs on Carova today, so much fun. Apparently there was a tropical storm which left giant puddles everywhere.
