I was cleaning the jeep today and noticed that there is a considerable amount of soot on the inside of the tailpipe. Is this amount normal?

How many miles have you done. I’ve looked at mine and it’s totally clear. Could be DPF issue ?

110 000 kms. But the sooth has been there since 20 000 kms. I once asked a question about it in another thread and there they told me it is normal that diesel engines have a bit of soot on pipe

If you haven’t had any other problems I wouldn’t worry about it.

This week I am going to the dealer for oil change. I will ask if they give extra attention to the exhaust system and look if there is indicaton of soot problems. The fault code of full DPF keeps showing up and that is not normal. It can be broken dpf or the sensors that measure the diffenence in pressure before and after dpf. I hope the latter, the first is quite expensive to fix, it is my second jl. The first jl I owned was bought back by the dealership because they weren’t able to fix the problem with the DEF they replaced my tank 5 times and the cat 2 times under warranty and even that didn’t fix it. They even sent experts from the headquarters in Amsterdam to look at it. I will keep you updated. How many kms do you have

Oh right if you have DPF full warning light and soot in the exhaust it’s highly likely you have some form of DPF issue or at least the beginnings of one. I’m on around 100,000kms I make sure to monitor my regens and never switch off during.

So I have an update.
I went in for oil change and maintenance. They put Bardahl DPF cleaner in my Diesel to give that a chance because the dealership wanted to try this before installing an expensive new DPF. They also did a forced regen. The day after, the engine light came on again. After diagnose they confirmed it was DPF again.
The dealership told me the last option is replacing the DPF. The price replacing with labor inclusive is €2995. I had a lot of luck because they have one in stock. It appears that it is a common problem, the mechanic told me, this year he already replaced 3. And it does not matter if the Jeep drove a lot or not he told.

Is it worth having the DPF removed and cleaned ? There are quite a lot of independent DPF specialists around these days that might be able to solve the problem for less money.

The engine performs much better since the new dpf. One thing that does not go away is the ticking noise when the engine is cold. It does not come from the engine bay but from under the engine. When idling you can it very silent sometimes. I don’t know from what it comes. I already have that sound for 3 years

I think the ticking is common on this engine when it's cold outside. Mine has it, as do others that I know.
