Also, Do NOT Feed the horses. They have patrols out on the beach watching for this. People have good intentions and want to feed them carrots, apples, etc., but that is not in their normal diet and it causes health problems for the horses. It's amazing, but they have survived there as long as people have with very little assistance. There are also horses on ShackleFord's banks, but a little harder to see.

I used to live in Oriental, NC, camped with the horses on Shackleford, they’re not too friendly?

We are currently in Fayetteville North Carolina and might go run the length of the outer banks with a car and grab an AirB&B for a couple days. Anything or place you can recommend to do or see while on the Outer Banks? We have stayed on Duck Island and Cape Look Out in the past. Needs to be car friendly this time.

Stop at Real Water Sports in Waves and have a beer and Sandwich watching wind surfers. Then head down to Hatteras, take the ferry to Ocracoke and have the best Mexican food on the east coast at Eduardo’s food truck.

Love the OBX, was just there the last week of June. We we always stay in Kitty hawk of Nags head.

If you do decide to head up to Corolla/Carova to see the horses you need a permit to park on the beach. you don't need it to drive and if you never stop you will be fine but if you plan to stop and park even for a few minutes you need a permit. from what I have heard the permits are hard to get and usually sell out as they only issue a fixed amount every week.

The ORV permit for Hatteras National Seashore is is not valid for the Corolla/Carova beaches. The permit for those beaches is issued by Currituck County and they only issue 3000 week, again only needed if you are going to park on the beach. If you want to drive and not stop at all then you don't need one.
