DIYers, How do you prime?

Time for me to drain the Water Fuel Separator again and every time I’ve started it up after doing so the system cranks for ~8 seconds which feels like an eternity and I’d like to shorten it if possible.



I’ve tried priming 3 times, 10 times, 15 times all with the recommended wait times in between which didn’t affect the sub-10 second crank time.

If that’s the best time that can be achieved I’ll be happy with it but definitely looking for better until I can confirm 10 seconds is normal after priming.

One thing I can confirm is that you should drive the Jeep around after draining the WFS and check for leaks of course but also to insure the fuel delivery system has normalized and won’t do another long crank.

I have the same issue. I feel like I’m following the priming instructions but it cranks longer than I like.

Seems like forever when you are cranking. But it still has to get pressure up?

I just go through the priming instructions. With the foot off the brake, go to run. Wait for a bit. Then off. Wait for a bit and repeat. 3rd time is all I've needed. Still cranks a few seconds longer than usual but not too many.

Just remembered to leave a quick update on this…I had improved results by not counting how many times I had to cycle the pump

First I made sure I had a full tank, probably didn’t matter but I just kept cycling the ignition switch to OFF, ACC and RUN with the driver door wide open, leaning out and my ear pointed down toward the ground to listen for what sounds like fuel being forced into the filter canister.

It’s a very distinct sound almost like a soda fountain gun shooting into a cup. Not to be confused with any buzzing or whirring.

The sound you’re listening for has a very distinct liquid sound component and it sounds like a container being filled.

In total, like I said, I wasn’t paying attention to the number of times I hit the button because I was dedicating all of my concentration to listen for something different than what I had heard in the past to get me some better results but I easily could have cycled to the RUN position over 10 times.

I was able to get 2 of the desired sounds before putting my foot on the brake and trying to start it. It worked well. Next time I’m going to try for 3 distinct sounds of fuel moving into the canister before starting again.

I've tried 3 times, 10 times, 10 times then letting it sit for 30 min, 10 times and letting it sit overnight, all with the same result of long cranking before starting similar to that video.

The last time I did it, I cycled it 7 times waiting until I could hear the lift pump complete it's cycle time. After then, it still took a while to start, but not quite as long as yours. Based on your timestamps, it looks like it took about 6-7 seconds for yours to start, I would say it took me approximately 4 then... I am going through the process this week myself and will try to remember taking video and/or timing it.

Fuel is in the canister almost instantly
when priming you are only forcing fuel up to the air pockets in Fuel lines
once you start cranking the engine you are releasing the air through the injectors once air is gone it fires its that simple.
so excessive priming isn’t necessary
prime then crank prime then crank will go much quicker
