I'm assuming this (orange box and red wire) is one of those trackers that dealers/banks put on cars. I am the 2nd owner of my Jeep and paid cash for it -- no loan. The 1st owner most likely had a car loan. Maybe it's from that original purchase. So, I'm going to cut it out but wanted to make sure it wasn't something else that I wouldn't want to mess with. It is crudely wired with DIY connectors, etc. It's obviously not a factory item.

Found the same on my daughters new car which was a factory ordered vehicle. Dealer had installed the tracker. I'm guessing the business model is a commission for every one they install.

Removed it and opened it up to look at the circuit board.. Cell phone chip, battery and Sim card on one side, GPS receiver on the other. When installed the unit is likely correlated with the VIN so it can track across owners.

I had slipped it into @Tredsdert 's rear rollbar crossmember which is the real reason he had to cut it out ;)

You're too nice. If I found a SIM card in a tracker in my Jeep that I didn't ask for, that's sending out data over the cell towers, I would have put that in a spare cell phone and started making long distance calls to countries with a high premium.

Better than the other thread of the guy trying to remove his rear roll bar again.

I always just recommend doing adding site:jlwranglerforums.com to any regular searches you do since forum search is usually pretty meh
The forum search engine is equivalent to asking the 23 year old teen woman working the plumbing section at Lowes for help finding a fitting. No generalizations for Lowes or stereotypes on women working there. Personal experience here.

I don't shame people who post repeated thread topics. It does help keep current info relevant and easier to for others to find.

My mind is far more devious than that, so for legal reasons I won’t begin to post my comments.

You know, maybe wire it into a garbage truck, or a pizza delivery guys car.

YES, I SEARCHED AND LOOKED AT THOSE THREADS. THAT'S WHY I ASSUMED THAT'S WHAT IT WAS. BUT IF SOMEONE RECOGNIZED THIS PARTICULAR BOX AS SOMETHING ELSE, I DIDN'T WANT TO F ANYTHING UP.
You’re welcome. I’m from the government and I’m here to help! :like:

By the way, when this happens (above) your CAPS LOCK is stuck on. (It’s on the lower left of your keyboard.). Again, no charge. just happy to help. :giggle:

I don't get it. Why would a dealership put this on a factory ordered vehicle? It's not like they can't track it through the Jeep app.

(And now I'm getting paranoid.)

They will often install lojack or equivalent on lot vehicles and put it in the addendum like window tint/nitrogen/door edge guards and the like. Doing like you did and special ordering you can specify they dont install any of that when it gets there and you shouldnt be charged for it as well. Thats what I did when I ordered mine.

Thanks, I wouldn't have even thought of it. I did specify no dealership decals, though, and they didn't put those on.

On the factory order I declined all dealer add-ons, yet the tracker was installed. It did not show up on any of the purchase invoice paperwork.
Its not the dealer or Jeep doing the tracking, rather the company that provides the tracker. Their semi-legit business is vehicle recovery. The concerning part is the total lack of transparency on what they do with all the vehicle tracking data they collect e.g. do they sell it, who do they sell it to and how they protect it.
The dealership said they had no information about what was done with the data. It would be pretty nasty if some organized criminals gained access to determine where you live and when you go to work...

The good news is the device was not weather resistant which makes an under-dash installation most likely and hence easy to find & remove.

Ok, as long as this thing is easy to spot. I'll take a look and there will be hell to pay if I find one.
