Dash Side Air Vents

I'm planning to remove (then paint, then replace) these vent covers. I started prying, then thought it might be better to find out which direction to pull before I break something. (Because, even after knowing, my track record says I will, in fact, still break something,)
The only images I'm finding are stickers to cover them, but I'm trying to figure out the clips on the back.

I’ve had the panel outlined in green off several times to run wiring. I’ve never paid attention, but I wonder if you removed it if you could use a small mirror or use your fingers to feel what’s on the backside of that vent.
