The rubber itself is not technically removable, the entire trim piece has to be replaced if you want new rubber. You can pull at the rubber and you’ll see little tabs in various spots where the rubber attaches to the trim piece. You can cut those with a razor then remove the rubber piece if you really wanted it out to clean it.

Yep. Even my Sport has them. There's just enough illumination at night to make them visible, which is fine by me. Such a feature is arguably unneeded. More to the point, I hate light pollution in the interior when I'd driving at night, and the cup holder lighting, at least in my vehicle, isn't adjustable.
In '23 (or maybe '22) they got rid of the dual dimmer wheels and went to a single wheel that controls all the interior lighting in unison. The gauges, info cluster, uConnect screen, dash buttons, footwell and cupholder lighting is all tied together now.
Yes, up through Model Year 2022 IIRC. I've one in my '21, but it's non-functional so far as I can tell (and I just re-checked a few nights ago.) Possibly it's functioning is linked to the vehicle's trim level.
Ambience? It must be a generational thing. If the car don't do it by the time they get in, no amount of ambience will help.It's for ambiance. The lighted foot wells increases your odds of scoring by 7.3%.
Back in 2018 I went from a base TJ Auto/air only to a JL sport, Auto/air, tint only and I have them! Along with cruise, sound bar, crank windows, like the lap of luxury compared to the 97 TJ.
