A reader on Jalopnik replied to me with the sticker from a '95 YJ. We've come a long way in some regards, but a lot of this wouldn't look out of place on a JL sticker.

Not a big fan of the Rio Grande edition. Basically a sticker package with a nicer sound system. Had the anemic i4 engine. You could get an SE with the inline 6 for the same price.

Not the point of the thread I guess.

Heh, no, but A) I'm impressed with your knowledge and B) the thread really doesn't have a lot of point anyway.

That's because I was shopping for Wranglers around that time!

Sadly I missed the boat on Jeeps when I was young, and spent too much time trying to figure out what I wanted to do when I grew up when I was theoretically grown up. I've enjoyed discovering the history of Jeeps now that I own one, but really wish I'd lived part of that history.

Makes sense. They're both American icons, both very good at what they do (off-road convertible for one, bystander life-threatener for the other), makes sense they'd be priced comparably.

If YJ 22-23 years ago was $15,000 then Jeep has always been over priced lol

That was the year before the TJ was shown off at all the auto shows, so not all that long ago really.

If you compare that to a 2018 Sport S, which is the closest match, you're looking at about 113% price difference.

Some of that is inflation, some of that is because JL has more safety features, but most of that is because of the introduction of the 2007 Unlimited model. When the Unlimited 4-door model hit the roads, suddenly Wrangler became a vehicle for the masses instead of a vehicle for the niche purists, and as such, the prices started to rise quickly.

Is the JL better? Yes.

Is the JL 113% better? Hmm.....

Based on inflation alone it would be around $24,750 for what should be considered a Base Sport 2-door special edition. So the price has gone up.
