Hey all,
So I have a manual 2022 4-door Rubicon 6 speed. Almost every time I go shift from 1-2 or 2-3 I hear a clunk under the Jeep.
This sound occurs after I have already shifted and I am beginning to let go of the clutch.
I notice it a lot more when at slower speeds. I now have 9k miles on it and my buddy sat in with me and he also heard it, told me that noise should not be happening. I have an appointment with dealer tomorrow.
What could this possibly be? Drive shaft? Steering box? I’m trying to shift differently etc., but no avail. 90% of the time I’ll get that clunk sound. 10% of the time I don’t, so I’ll start getting paranoid about my shifting only for it to happen again.
Anyone with a manual here with advice, same issues, fix?

too many posts about this and hoping some help to narrow it all down on here please!

Is the clunk happening when you're actually throwing the shift? Or when you release the clutch? Every once in a while I'll get a small noise if I mess up and am under revved when releasing the clutch. But that's 100% user error and very easy to avoid by just shifting properly. I've never experienced any out of the ordinary clunking when actually throwing the gear. Just the normal sounds of the gears moving into place.

Yeah it’s after the shifting and I’m letting go of clutch

I have a clunk at the same spot. Especially if I reverse and then shift into first. It can also happen from first to second.

I can't find it. While searching I did eliminate some other noises lol.

Going to dealer tomorrow, but no idea what this could be!!! Aggravating

I get it in my '22 JLUR. I consider it normal since EVERY manual equipped Jeep I've driven, heard or watched at some point in time does this.
If you add up all the slop in the drivetrain between the clutch and the rear wheels there's the possibility of some clunking going on.
With and Automatic the drivetrain is under load at all times so you don't develop any slack. With a manual every time you shift you un-load the drivetrain and may or may not have some slop to take up when you release the clutch.
If you want to hear some clunking, stall your Manual Jeep in a rock pile and have it rock back and forth a bit.

Yeah I went to Jeep today and they said the same thing. Even met a mechanic with a manual wrangler himself with same sounds

Frankly, this is disappointing. The noises from my transmission are intermittent and not consistently reproduced, so I never know if I'm going to enjoy a fuss-free drive or deal with noises that make me regret getting the manual.

Mine is a 6 speed '21 Wrangler Sport S with 7500 gentle miles on the clock. I get all sorts of annoying noises under specific conditions. The noises seem to be from 'bouncing' from some kind of lash, or excessive clearance somewhere. Examples -
  1. Normal shifting from 1 to 2: Brief series of metallic noises as soon as the clutch is pushed in while shifting from 1 to 2 (only after Jeep has already run 30-60 minutes)
  2. Normal gear shifting 2 to 3 - Mild 'thud' or 'clank' noise when pushing in the clutch or releasing it during 2>3 gear shifts
  3. Dropping rear wheels from a small height - When dropping the back wheels from a kerb or rock back to ground level, with the clutch fully pressed in all through (before, during and immediately after the drop)
  4. Getting front wheels up a kerb or rock in 4Lo - Give it a bit of gas to climb, and once atop the kerb, immediately press the clutch in fully. With the clutch fully in, there's a severe noise that feels like something metal is bouncing back and forth.
The source of the noise seems to be directly under the front seat row. With 20+ years of driving manual transmission cars and SUVs and valuing (and achieving) smoothness in gear shifts, I am sure this is not about driving technique.

I've taken the Jeep to the local dealership and demonstrated point 4, but they neither have someone experienced in driving manuals nor do they have a 'reference vehicle' with which to compare. Consequently, they are unable/unwilling to even acknowledge that the noise in point 4 is not normal. When you don't even acknowledge a problem, it's a dead end.

Without audio of these clunks, it's impossible to diagnose.

I can say that, in 4Lo, abruptly changing throttle or engaging/disengaging the clutch under load can cause a clanking. It has been explained to me as a small, normal amount of slack in the transfer case. The abrupt release of tension in the driveline causes the metallic bouncing sound.

Whether that's accurate or not, it happened on my 6 speed Xterra as well as my Jeep now. My Xterra had nearly 100k abused miles on it when I sold it without ever having an issue.

I'll try to get an audio recording of the noises. This is the first 4WD with a manual transmission that I've driven, so I have no comments on the explanation of the slack in the transfer case.

However, there should really be no lousy noises from normal operation in 2H at least. These should definitely not be normal, and if they are, it's a disappointing and sub-par implementation of a manual transmission in the Wrangler.

I will try to get an audio recording of the 2H noises, which may not be easy given that they occur randomly.

I had this same issue on my '23. Had metal shavings in it and so they replaced it. However, I now have a couple hundred miles on the new one and its starting to make the same exact sounds you're mentioning again. Thinking it is normal. Sadly.
