Has anyone experienced this issue??
This is an eTorque engine so not the standard ess system.

When engine restarts after ess stop (like at a traffic light for example) it’s making a sharp clacking sound that appears to be coming from the engine compartment. Jeep dealer in Alabama said it would take them a lot of time to diagnose. I suspect they didn’t want to mess with it. I can’t be the only Wrangler owner with this issue. The noise is loud enough that it can be heard over traffic noise with windows up. This issue was posted recently but didn’t get many responses. TIA

Do you have a recording of the sound?

Auto or manual? Does it make if you turn off the auto stop, so it doesn't engage at stops? If off and it still makes noise I would think it's not the E-Torque system.

I have same 2021 JLUR 3.6 engine E-Torque auto and do not have that noise. 24K miles. Mine has always sounded like it has a waste gate blow off valve despite not being a turbo. Not sure what makes it though, maybe the E-Torque?

Don’t want to hex myself, but I have a 21 3.6 auto e torque. So far, it has been as seamless as can be. No weird noises upon re-startup. I actually like that I’m not polluting at long signals, and I’m a gas loving guy. Hope this turns out to be something simple for you…..

8 speed auto. I’ll try with ess disabled but since the noise appears on restart I’d doubt it’ll still make the noise, but it’s a good test. It doesn’t make the sound when shifting between neutral and drive when stopped. 36k miles.

As far as I can tell it just happens on a restart.
Probably an issue with the MGU. There's been a bit of noise about them....making noise. I've never seen one but I've read the TSBs about it. There's a flash update to reduce the noise they make and if it continues you're supposed to replace it. The TSB got deleted at some point as a recall came out for the HCP(the mgu) for an unrelated issue that kinda overwrote the previous one.

Personally unless it sounds horrible while running I'd just ignore it for now. It has an 8yr/80k warranty so you're covered for awhile
