After talking to a few local detail shops and getting prices along with the prep steps they do before application.
decided to make it a diy weekend project.

I already use and have mesquites polisher, assorted foam pads and products to clean, polish, wax paint.

I plan to use mquire polish followed by clay bar followed by creacoat ceramic coating.
agree with others, the prep work is the time consuming part.

does ceramic coating actually defend against getting trail pin stripes from sticks?
No, coatings (ceramic or otherwise) are not "armor" for paint, in any way. They simply add another layer to the clear coat that fills in the (already limited) imperfections making a pretty non-stick surface even more non-stick. What they do is keep dirt from sticking, thus making vehicles easier to keep clean and stopping the damage that dirt and contaminants do when left on paint over time. Same thing wax does, just (supposedly) better and longer lasting. The real world results vary to a huge degree.

Furthermore, NO coating lasts "years". The professional coatings that claim/guarantee years of protection have to be re-applied regularly. It's what they refer to as "maintenance". You have to bring your vehicle back in for "maintenance" but what they are really doing is re-applying. I know you'll hear lots of people claim "well mine still looks as good as it did 5 years ago when it was first coated" but those are people who have major skin in the game and i've found that "looks as good" varies greatly depending on the viewer. I've seen a few of the biggest name "permanent" coatings and they all were already breaking up by the six month mark.

I would never spend more than a few hundred on a coating...I mean unless you really don't want to do it yourself, but even then, spending $2k+ is a complete waste.

Which kit did you buy?

Did you have a shop put it together, or did you buy it from a shop without any indication as to which kit they used?

Also which engine did they put in it?

It's nice. My uncle has one of these. He went period with his. Has a 427 Cobra Jet in there, along with torque thrust wheels and a original white factory color. (Obviously it's a modern-day version of that original factory color, but it's still looks original even though his was built in 2003.)

In his case it helps because he flips classic muscle cars for a living, and a buddy of his got his hands on a serial numbered original Ford 427 the same time he was building his replica in his garage. Almost like it was meant to be!

This is the one my uncle has.

I hope you didn't pay too much for it. 😬

I ppf and ceramic coat all our cars with CSL and Exo. I do the paint correction and ceramic coating myself. Do NOT use any polish or wax after paint correction. The purpose of the paint correction is to eliminate any swirl marks and all products off the clear coat so the ceramic coating can adhere.

it generally takes me 3 days to correct and do the 2 coatings. You also need to let it cure 24 hours after the final Exo coat.

it absolutely works as water droplets sit almost as a complete drop on the paint. It only prevents love marks (scratches from washing and drying) only ppf will stop trail damage. I also use a product called “bead maker” as a drying agent each time I wash my cars.

i admit I’m very particular as I have a wall mounted pressure washer and foam cannon system like obsessed garage to wash my cars.

You want to remove the contamination both physically and chemically.
Before applying the ceramic coating use a isopropyl alcohol solution to remove any polishing product and fat fingers grease ;)

I use Griots for a quick 20 minute application that generally last 9 months to a year on my daily drivers. I use Simoniz Diamond glaze on my better vehicles after paint correction. Put it on my 2015 Challenger Hellcat and it still beads and shines today. Most people are not looking for a show quality shine on daily drivers. For most people the $20 Griots is fine and better than most any wax. The simoniz professional Diamond glaze runs about $100 for a small bottle that will do 2 coats. Scotthd on you tube used to do ceramic coating tests if you want to check out various of top quality ceramics and the spray on ones.

Tell everyone you're a mall crawler, without telling everyone you're in the mall crawler!

I prefer the term "Pavement Princess", thank you! :)

Though I am considering going to Bantam this year, if I can do the 11 hour drive.

I'm going on having my 6th vehicle professionally ceramic coated and I have never needed to take one back to the detailer. My wife's MkS is the car we put the most miles on and is the first vehicle I ever had ceramic coated and it is as slick and the water beads up on it today as it did five years ago when I first had it applied.

As for the maintenance part my first detailer used Prowax products and the vehicles he did with that ceramic coating he would give me a bottle of their detail spray and said after a year or so use this spray on wipe off stuff a couple times a year and it's supposed to help it last even longer. After five years I still have half of the bottle left. That detailer retired so I had to find a new shop and the new place uses a different brand called Opti-Coat. I just washed my truck with that stuff this past week and it is as slick now as it was the first day.

Another thing I love about having vehicles ceramic coated is how fast and easy they are to dry after washing them. I use my leaf blower to blow the water off first before I ever touch it with a towel. With a coated vehicle the water blows off so easy and fast it only takes one medium size micro fiber towel to finish it. It makes you appreciate how slick they are when you wash and dry a vehicle that isn't coated because drying them it's like the water is glued on the surface. You don't realize the difference until you have both.

Only if you use PPF after the ceramic coating.
