Thank you! Yes my drill is proving to be a PITA and limiting factor for me so far :(

Did you drl straight down in your center console storage (not cup holder), or did you drill “sideways” going towards the front of the vehicle?

Hey found a pic of my hole in the console. This is looking towards the front.

Also, go ahead and use this as an excuse to get a new drill!

Very helpful! Thank you!

Only problem is, I have a great matching DeWalt cordless drill and impact driver set that I love :( So can’t convince myself to buy a new one lol.

I took vhfan5150’s idea a step farther. Thanks for the inspiration, vhfan5150!

I took a bunch of the magical and mystical substance known as Sugru and molded a little rubber dock to secure the lightening cable upright. It is also a little rubbery, so it provides enough play to wiggle without worry of breaking when the phone is attached.
Any chance you’re still around, @tmo4ever? Or, does anyone else have experience with Sugru?

I’m looking for pointers/tips/etc. on molding a similar “dock” in the same spot as the above photo. Wire is all run now - just need to get to molding.

Do you have the part numbers you ordered for this?
Everything off Amazon as follows:

iPad set up:
1-Foot USB Cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01COD9OVQ/ref=twister_B078MW9GC6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
RAM-B-201U-A - Composite Short Double Socket Arm
RAM-B-367U - Motorcycle Clamp Base 1 Inch Ball with Bolts
RAM-HOL-UN8BU - X-Grip Cradle (for iPad Mini)
Note for install I drilled all the way through chicken bar and secured with a nut. Solid!

For Cellphone:
10-Foot USB Cable https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0721456BZ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
RAM-B-166-UN7U - Complete Suction Cup Base with Arm & Cradle
Note for install I ran the cable under the dash down console to connect to rear USB plug. Do NOT get a cheap cable - it will not carry the signal and constantly disconnects from UConnect System because of distance to source.

I’m still here, and I love my solution. The sugru has held beautifully. One of the awesome benefits to this solution is that it works with any phone (assuming you’re an all lightening or micro-usb family).

When my wife drives, she can just slit her phone without any extra hardware, and fully use CarPlay.

Here are some more photos with my phone docked.

Please excuse the mess. No one told me how messy your interior gets when you drive topless all summer.

I've got the same setup now - and am loving it. Thank you for sharing this.

I'll try to grab some photos to share of my setup. It's very similar, with only a few minor differences:

1. In the center console storage, I removed the bottom rubber liner and drilled down - just one less visible hole (and my USB cable runs straight down from the USB port to under that rubber pad and disappears).

2. I have my Sugru coming up a bit higher than yours, so it "cradles" the phone a bit (I plan to add a bit more to build it up even further). It currently goes up to create about a quarter inch "pocket" that the phone sits in.

3. You are probably a bit better with Sugru than I am, so your work is slightly "smoother" than mine :)

Still need to do my last two packs of Sugru to try to make it an even more supportive dock. Functionally, it’s dxcellent!

From pictures and 1 "visit" to a JL, I ordered a cigarette lighter mount with a built in Qi charger. I think it will clear the transfer case and not be a pain?
Which one did you order?

You certainly can do just that. It all depends on how you use your phone. Apple CarPlay only allows a limited set of apps to be displayed through the onboard system. For example, if you like to use Waze for navigation, you’ll still need your phone visible. This is not a function of the vehicle but of choices made by Apple.
This will no longer be true with the release of iOS 12 and updates to CarPlay. You will be able to use what ever map app you want via CarPlay ...

I went a little different direction. I widened the hole in the small coin stash cubby under the parking break with a drill (located under the rubber pad).

Then I fished the cable from underneath the plastic trim and ran it under the edge of the gearbox plastic trim up to the Media slot.

I prefer USB-C connection that USB-As my Google Phone charges very rapidly through USB-C.

It keep the console/transmission area tidy with no cables and allows me to use the port I prefer.

What if you wanted to mount the iPhone in the way you had the iPad mounted? I like the setup of the iPad mount, but would like to use this setup for an iPhone.
