Weird to me, had a CEL pop up on my early 4xe (w/17K miles) today. Was planning to leave on a week-long trip tomorrow so this caused some consternation. Pulled out my OBD scanner and ran the codes... nothing. Did it again, nothing. Tried a second scanner from a different company, same. Erased all codes. CEL still lit. Drove to the store and back, used all of the battery and about 5 miles of gas engine, CEL still there.

Called the local Jeep dealer service manager. Told them I knew they would be busy but would it be possible to come by tomorrow and have them run the Jeep scanner and tell me if its a problem I can live with or should I not drive it and make other arrangements. They suggested I take it to AutoZone and have them scan it. They of course then heard my worries and re-assured me I could get an appointment for next week. Sigh.

Any advice on this from someone who has experienced a CEL with no related codes? The only thing outstanding on the Jeep is a long-term TPMS light. because driver-side rear wheel won't register. Its currently waiting for a new TPMS module under a prior repair visit but the dealer had to order the part. Would a long-term single issue like that trigger a CEL when it hadn't in the prior 8 months, or is that a red herring?

Thanks in advance.

Follow-up, we switched vehicles for our trip and took a backup. Didn't want to risk it.

Last follow up -- Jeep dealer service advisor said it was the tether for the gas cap stuck under the cap. I find it hard to believe because I've refilled it several times since the light lit, and I'm pretty careful about securing the cap each time, but there you go.

Same thing happened last week - CEL but no error codes. Assuming it's the gas cap issue, but there were no error codes though the CEL was still on after a few days. Hopefully it clears soon!
