Mine ran down the battery, I use it on long trips and just unplug it when done.

I had it plugged in inside the armrest.

I have one and have been using it without issue for about 2 years. There should be no issues with leaving it plugged in since the USB ports power down after a certain amount of time after the ignition is turned off.
