So I was replacing my engine air filter, and I dropped one of the screws down the engine bay. I get a flashlight and I’m looking around and I just happen to notice a different screw sitting next to my battery at the bottom of the tray. It is not a screw that I have ever undone. I’ve never messed with anything near the battery. my guess is when my jeep was being built, somebody dropped that screw and just moved on. I am trying to identify it because I want to make sure that a new screw was put in.

Edit: mystery solved by Jadmt. It’s definitely a hood prop screw. I have both in there so whoever dropped this one at the factory replaced it. Thank you very much Jadmt

Front fender liner maybe? Look inside the wheel well, directly above your front tire, should be 2 or 3 each side.

Ok will do. I would be curious how it ended up in my battery tray if that’s the case

It's too short for a fender liner bolt.

It's black, so most of the engine compartment bolts are painted with body color. You can see a lot of that and eliminate those. The areas that have black bolts are mostly lower or retaining a part that isn't painted body color and the front "core support", another word for radiator support or the area across the front that provides the frame for the radiator, hood latch, etc. It's all black on the core support and the bolts that hold some bracket on other smaller piece on would use a bolt of that size.

So in the picture to the left, there is that hole and there is a threaded hole in there that the screw fits into and screws in. However, the other side is the same thing an empty hole that the Screw fits in. All the other screws next to them are painted. Maybe this screw was meant to go in there and then get painted. Idk

That hole is empty normally.

It’s probably left over from assembly.

check your bracket for your hood prop...should have two bolts just like that. I can see how one of those would end up in the battery area.

That is what I am thinking, however, I am trying to figure it out because I want to make sure the guy who dropped it didn’t just say screw it and move on. that He actually got another screw to replace it.

There are 2 brackets in the battery box to hold the battery in place, I am not sure what the screws look like though.

I think they are longer and smaller diameter.

@MichaelT333 Can you take some underhood shots, maybe we can spot it.

Looks like you are missing an air filter box screw, but that isn't it.
