From a person that doesn't know much about these winches (me), would the XRC be about as invisible in the factory steel bumper as the X20 is? It's hard for me to pass up on that 299 XRC deal, but I will if most people feel that the X20 is *that* much better.

I’ve used my XRC with steel cable a few times. Has worked well for me. My view on it was... I wanted a winch for the just in case and not break the bank if it never gets used. However, it would suck to get stranded because a cheap winch took a crap out on the trail (even expensive winches fail too). Idk, lol. Your money, your call.
