There are so many things besides having the same mash bill that makes whiskies different. Most distilleries only have a few different mash bills. But the process and storage, aging, and finishing make all the difference. Drink Benchmark then ER or EH Taylor - all from the same mash bill. That’ll prove it to you.

A great friend of mine that was born in Hazard Kentucky and now runs a string of 18 bourbon based restaurants in the mid south said to me, "there are no BAD bourbons, only better bourbons" and I agree. ;)

On a road trip from Vegas to OKC again. Since I'm solo and have time, I make several stops along the way and do some hunting. First two stops I made in Flagstaff got me a couple of the mini Blanton's and a BT Kosher Rye. Saw a couple other bottles I was interested in but price was a little high and I didnt want to blow all my $$ right off the bat. Came up empty in Gallup and Albuquerque. Going to poke around here in Amarillo a bit tomorrow then make my way to OKC.

VERY COOL!!!! What did they set you back? I've never seen the small ones before.

Well, we did a blind taste test last night. EH Taylor, Blanton’s, Eagle Rare and Ancient Age. I guessed EH correct. Got the rest wrong. We also ranked them from 1st to worst. Eagle Rare ended up being the best, then Ancient Age, EH and Blanton’s. Strange how things work out when you don’t know what you’re drinking.

They were $17/ea. Kinda expensive for what it is, but I had to buy them. I probably won't ever see them in a store again.

One of my local stores has a premium bourbon I’ve never tried called St. Cloud. It’s a single barrel 7 year old cask strength, but it’s about $160. Anyone had it? Worth the price tag?

Can't say I have had it or heard of it. Seems premium for sure at that level. I tend to collect bottles over $150+ and won't open them. I don't know why but in my head it somehow makes sense.

I've been hooked on Jefferson's Ocean lately $60-$90 a bottle depending on the voyage.

I've not heard of it and <distiller.com> hasn't reviewed it. But the user comments on a previous bottling are pretty divided.

That’s why I’m cautious to spend that sort of $$$ without some feedback. Don’t know who the actual distiller is and nobody I know has even heard of it. There’s an old lady that works at one of the liquor stores I frequent and she will pull out everything they’ve got hidden under the counter if I ask nicely. She had this one and Dickel 15 year single barrel at suggested retail. Didn’t pull the trigger on either.

I've actually been pleasantly surprised by Dickel in the past. I tried it at a Whiskies of the World event and enjoyed it. It's one I'd consider at retail but not at markup.

I don’t blame you. I found this on their history section…

I wonder if it’s almost like an Orphan Barrel type of offering.
