So how was it? Been thinking about grabbing a bottle.
In the town where I grew up in the 70’s, there were only about 3 or 4 liquor stores. The kind of small rural place where you didn’t have a skid row, so degenerate alcoholics hung out behind the liquor store or in the vacant lot next door sitting around all day on 5 gallon buckets getting hammered, swapping stories, and providing unlimited entertainment for an 8 year old.

This is what they drank (or Gibley’s gin).

I'm a little late to this conversation, but Whiskey took all my money before I got a Jeep. I have far too many "daily" preferences to name. The thing I love about whiskey is there's so many choices that you can cater to your mood that day...

Some photos to illustrate my "choices":

Never had Pappy but I am sure I will love it.
Pappy is fan-damn-tastic, but not really worth the prices it's at these days. Since you're in KY (I grew up in Northern KY in Erlanger) you should look for anything by Old Carter or King of Kentucky. They're not cheap (usually $200+) but they equal or exceed Pappy's flavor.

If you have any inclination toward Scotch, the Japanese stuff is excellent. I don't like the peaty, smoky Scotch so I only drink stuff from the North (Highland, Speyside) brands.

The Japanese whisky is very close to that flavor profile but juuuussst different enough to be unique. I have a few I highly recommend if you're interested.

Do any of you do “infinity bottles” ? Here is mine currently , I figured it was appropriate.
I'm currently working on two Infinity Bottles. One is "everyday" bourbons and one is all Cask Strength ones.

I pour two ounces into the infinity bottle and then take 0.5 ounces from that mixture and pour it into a small sample size bottle. Once they're full, my buddies and I are going to sample each one in order and be nerdy and write down tasting notes n' stuff...

GAWD.... I remember when this was $24 bottle that no one but my friends and I knew about... [sigh]
I know! Weller was one of my favorites until ABC locked it in their "vault". Oh well. Blade and Bow is a pretty decent wheated bourbon I think, and like collecting the Blanton's tops, they have numbered keys you can collect.

Kaiyo is my go to Japanese whiskey. Not peat forward and to me has a depth of flavor that reminds me of bourbon sometimes. I think it's really delicious.

Kaiyo is great, especially the cask strength (which is a rarity for Japanese whisky). Overall, Nikka has been my favorite: Nikka from the Barrel, Nikka Coffee Malt, Nikka Miyagikyo, Nikka Yoichi Single Malt, all fantastic.

Hibiki is another stellar lineup. The Hibiki 21yr is one of the Top 5 whiskies I've ever had.

Love me some Blade n' Bow! It's one of the bottles I use to introduce newbies to bourbon. Just such high-quality for a $40 bottle. I didn't know their keys are numbered — isn't there some deal or special something they do for you if you bring the keys to their distillery?

WAAAAAAYYYY back, my buddies and I visited the Maker's Mark distillery and signed up for their free Ambassador Program. 7 years later I got some Willy Wonka style golden tickets in the mail for my VIP Tour. We got to take the tour again, but its guide was Rob Samuels. It was great because he told all kinds of family stories and was really personable. Then we got to hand-dip our own bottles from "our" barrels (they stamp your name on a plate and tack it on a barrel).

Here's an interesting one that even if you don't like the flavor maybe you can appreciate the story. Metallica wanted to create a bourbon and did so with the late master distiller David Pickerell. Blackened American Whiskey uses low frequency sound waves to assist in the aging process by playing a playlist of Metallica songs while the bourbon is aging. They say each run tastes different because a different playlist is generated every time.

Varying heat and humidity will affect the flavor and character of whiskey as it ages. The variety of wood and char level of the ok affects flavor and character.

What music you play for it? Nah. That’s called a gimmick. Shame on you Metallica for trying to get one over on fans.

Just cracked open a bottle of Trader Joe’s Kentucky Bourbon. 14.99. I have to admit it’s pretty tasty with a nice light burn. Might be the new night cap
