  1. Put in neutral
  2. Jack up rear of jeep
  3. Try to turn drivers side rear tire; does it turn?
  4. Does it look to wobble?
  5. What does passenger side do?
A new housing is $600
New axles are $150 a side

This is not rocket science to sort out.

It was, I was traveling ~70mph
Given the location of the impact towards the center of the rear axle....how did the front axle get by unscathed?

That’s a nasty hit and I’m not sure how it missed the front but dam that had to be louuuuud. Axle is only 1800 and couple hours labor to install. You would spend hours of labor trying to straighten and stiffening it back up. Good luck getting the new axle in a timely matter

So the Jeep hit a large rock at high speed (was not offroading at the time). Apparently the rear axle (Dana M220) is bent and it drives like crap, effectively undriveable. It pulls hard side to side, tire shop said the wheels look angled in.

Its been sitting at the shop for a while now and Im still waiting on an estimate and repair timeline.

Has anyone here dealt with this before? Is this even repairable or will insurance likely be buying a whole new axle assembly? Everything is moving so slow and I have no sense of what to expect.

i bent the axle housing on my mustang once hitting a pothole on the highway.. it is fixable you just have to find someone professional / reputable to fix it, inner components can be checked as well.. also check control arms and control arm mounting locations.

Thanks. Preliminary insurances estimate based on photos only was ~800.
Im thinking no way. Curious to hear what the collision shop says.
You can't buy the axle housing. The rear axle is $2300 then you still have labor.

Have you tried to buy an axle housing for the JL?

If a Rubicon, 68401896AA for the rear axle, $1385.00 or $909 with discount plus labor. Also need 68400272AA bolt kit x 8 and 68378949AA lubricant. 3+ months back order on the axle. I had mine replaced due to service locker light. The actuator went bad but the actuator isn’t available as a separate part. Extended warranty covered it.

I know this is covered elsewhere, but I still find it wild that the actuator isn't available as a separate part. "Replace the axle". Seems like a sign of the times, I had a bearing go out on my Tundra and nobody wanted locally wanted to press a new bearing in. Everyone wanted to replace the whole assembly from the spline out to the wheel hub. I couldn't find a machine shop to do the press work for me locally, so I found a transmission shop who hopefully will get it back to me today.

No mechanic wanted to do anything short of $1800. I guess I'd better start getting handy with a hydraulic press.

Agreed 100%. And to add insult to injury, waited over 3 months for the axle to arrive. At least the extended warranty covered it for me. The dealership said they had the exact same thing happen at least 10 times at their dealership alone. Such a common problem that the part is difficult to get plus supply chain delays. Their parts system said there was over 300 in the queue to get one and they have seen it as high as 400. Here is the long thread about it here
