I have had my '21 JLURD for one year and have experienced sporadic (weird) battery/electrical issues. Such as, emails from Jeep of battery charging warnings, in vehicle high beam messages and a constant start/stop battery charging message. I've had it checked by dealerships three times and each time I've been told there is no problem. For the email message I was told by two dealerships there were no codes and it was a information type message. For the star/stop issue I was told there was nothing wrong with the batteries. I'm on a 'permanent vacation' status and only make short trips around town (Tucson). But, we take longer trips throughout the year. We have summer trips planned for Sedona, AZ; Telluride and Grand Lake, Co and Moab. Because of what I've read about the poor reputation of the stock batteries I decide to just replace the batteries myself (I have a connection to get batteries at cost).

So today I went to remove the batteries and when I pulled the cover off the main battery positive terminals I noticed the smaller cable connection was not tight. My immediate thought was I'll tighten it when I put it back together. But, upon further examination I found the threads on the post are stripped. I've never had the positive battery connection cover off and therefore, it must have been that way from the factory.

My questions are: What is powered by the smaller positive cable and is it possible to repair the threads on the pressed in stud, If not then what are my options for repair? I'd prefer to avoid the dealership.

By the way, I will still be replacing the batteries later today.

Loose connection and stripped stud showing wear from the nut.

Wow, looks like your going to need to solder and crimp a new connector plate on. Almost seems like someone installed the wrong nut on the stud. Or they used an impact to installed the nut. Either way the person knew what they were doing when It happen. I’d be looking for warranty on that.

My plan B is to take it to the dealership. If I can't easily repair it.

To fix it correctly you need to replace that post. You could always try to reduce the size of the stud by running a smaller die down it. Since the stud isn’t acting as much of a conductor as the actual plate is. But still best practice it to replace that small piece in its entirety. If you have the tools do it yourself. I don’t trust the dealership to even put gas in my Jeep.

I did take the Jeep to the dealership and they were able to ā€˜repair’ the threads. During my drive home I monitored the battery voltage and it was constantly 14.0v versus before the repairs the battery voltage varied from 12.3v to 14.2v.

I plan to monitor it and will see if I get anymore battery charging warnings.
