Battery Bus/terminals

Does anyone have a diagram or picture of which terminal is which? I'm looking at:

1. putting my NoCo ring terminals onto the bus to charge the batteries
2. which terminals to disconnect to charge the batteries separately.

I'm assuming if I disconnect the AUX negative, connect my charger to that and the positive bus and it will charge/diagnose/de-sulfinate the AUX. Then I can switch over to the main battery by hooking up to the standard positive and negative terminals on the battery (while keeping the AUX negative disconnected).

Use the positive battery terminal for both batteries and manage the negative cables as you describe to isolate the individual batteries.

Do I understand correctly that to charge the aux battery I would connect the charger (using alligator clips) as:
- positive clip to main battery positive terminal
- negative clip to aux battery negative wire after disconnecting the wire from the main battery negative terminal

And to charge the main battery I would connect the charger as you would to a regular single battery, but keep the aux battery negative wire disconnected from the main battery negative terminal while charging the main battery.

Correct?

Do you think this is a better method than connecting a single battery maintainer to the main battery, which I have been told will maintain both batteries? (I am skeptical of that claim, as I do not see how a single battery tender could determine which battery needs what in order to effectively maintain both.)

This will work, but if your maintainer has any intelligence for battery maintenance, it won’t be able to perform those tests against both batteries.

That's what I thought, thanks. I have been using CTEK chargers for some years, and so bought another for the new JL.

I asked them about using their chargers with an ESS battery system, and they state that the charger will maintain both batteries. But I think that's a misleading statement, since, as you note, the "smart" features of the tender are not going to be able to work properly against both batteries.

Do you think the use of a charger like this could actually harm the batteries? I.e., by potentially running programs against one battery that does not need it because the tender detects a systemic issue?
