Hi all.

Now that my dead aux. battery has been replaced, thought it would be interesting to see how many JL owners have had issues with their batteries. I've created a poll to see how many of us had bad batteries.

So please state your year, model, engine, how long you had the car and if you had battery issues. I'll start.

2019 JLU Sahara. 3.6L. 2.5 weeks old. Dead aux. battery.

I know the sample size is really small (6 voted even though there's 91 views), but we're looking at a 50% failure rate for batteries. Not good.

Come on people! Let's add to the poll so we can get more accurate stats.

If you get the batteries replaced under warranty do they replace them with the same types that came from the factory, which are apparently sub-par? Or are the replacements better quality?

Also, do the batteries give much in the way of warning when they die? I’d know what to look for on the main battery but I don’t have any experience with an aux system like this for ESS. I’d hate to get stuck on a trip somewhere.

To be honest, I have no clue. I didnt even bother to look if its the exact same replacement but i would assume so. I was never left stranded. I just noticed my ESS stopped working and it was always stuck in battery charge mode. You can keep an eye on the voltage in your dash. if it stays constantly at 12.5-13V you are ok. If if stays at 14.0V or higher, I would say take a look at the batteries because its not maintaining a charge.

For me, I had zero warning. I never got any ESS error messages or any kind of warning at all. Even my battery voltage monitoring on the dash was showing 14.2 volts, which is in the normal range. I left my car for an hour, came back and it wouldn't start. Radio still worked, doors still locked and unlocked, but it wouldn't start. In fact, it wouldn't even go into ACC mode. The next day, all power was gone from the car. Couldn't even remotely unlock the doors. The dealership did a GR8 test and the aux. battery failed. Got a new one under warranty replacement.

Regardless, I just put in an order for the Genesis dual battery kit. It will be replacing the main and aux. batteries with dual Odyssey 25-PC1400 batteries. Much better batteries than the stock ones that were probably sourced from the lowest bidder.

2018 JLUR 16 months old and a little over 36,000 miles. It is just out of warranty. Had to replace the large battery today. No warning. Dealership said for them to check the batteries takes 3 hours...really sounded like a scam. This first dealership was going to charge $365 for the large battery. Went to another dealership and got it for $160.

Once the battery went in...starting fine. The Start/Stop system is showing Battery Protection Mode and is not working. Read this and other threads and checked the fuses...over half needed to be re-set and a few were not engaged. Regarding the fuses...are they like this from the factory or does off road wheeling cause the fuses to loosen?

The battery system is complicated and seems to have many points of failure.

My ESS is starting to go into battery charge more often and seems to have started doing this a month ago. It worked flawless for the first year (bought my JLUR in July 2018). Most of my driving is short trips but it's literally been a drastic change in the past month, my ESS rarely works now. Going to have it looked at when I go in for the V41 recall and tire rotation in a couple weeks. All my fuses are seated properly so perhaps I just have the beginnings of a bad aux battery.

What does your battery voltage reading on your EVIC say? Is it constantly in the 14.2V and above range? If you have a battery tender, I would also try topping up your battery to see if ESS starts working again.

It reads 14.1 constantly and has been since I've owned the Jeep which tells me something has happened recently....or maybe my aux battery has slowly been dying since last July.

That’s what mine was like before the aux battery failed. Definitely take it in and have the dealership run a GR8 test on both batteries.

Scheduled for Monday morning. ESS has completely stopped working now for 3 days.
