So I have a 2020 Jeep Wrangler unlimited 3.6 automatic I noticed that the vehicle has a lot of backlash. It never really has gotten worse. I feel like the vehicle is always kind of been like this. Is there a service bulletin a possible deflect or is this normal? It doesn’t really bother me. I just wanna make sure nothing is broken anybody have a similar experience?

What do you mean by backlash? Describe the symptoms.

When was the transmission fluid and filter changed? In contravention to the misleading "Lifetime fill" language evident in the Owner's Manual, ZF themselves -- the designers of the 8HP in our Jeeps -- recommends changing both at ~60K miles.

There's an excellent DIY thread here, if you need help.

Edit: It seems the OP might be concerned about the axle's ring & pinion gears, not the transmission.

So I plan on changing the transmission fluid at 60,000 miles right now I’m sitting at like 27,000 so I don’t think that would be it

What is the both that you were referring to? Yeah I have read that 60 k is the sweet spot
I never really listen to the dealer when it comes to lifetime fluid I plan on changing the fluid and filter

I guess just excessive play in between the gears
My old Mustang had this problem until I had it regeared. The new gears were installed at the tighter end of the spec and the problem never returned. It's nothing for you to worry about unless it gets worse or if the gears start making noise. Just means they were installed at the loose end of the spec is all.

I'm assuming you get a slight delay and thunk/clunk noise when you let off the gas and lightly get right back on it again...Almost feels like something is slipping but you can tell it's from the rear end right?

Thank you I had a feeling it was something along the lines of what you were saying like I said it’s always been like that it’s not getting worse. It’s not a big deal. I was just wondering if anybody else had this

Just one of them things. Mass produced stuff has tolerances and not everything comes out on the low side.

Everything has a tolerance but how much you spend generally has an affect on how bad they can be. If you want to spend the big bucks and get .0001 vs "big bucks" to get .001 then it is what it is.

Isn't some backlash necessary?

Yeah some mine just feels a little more
Jeep and FCA more broadly aren’t know for their tight tolerances on differentials. The half ton truck axles have terrible failure rates, but somehow our jeeps seem to be just fine, even with the slop.
