This is my understanding. If your battery voltage, prior to starting, is below a certain threshold, the Auxillary switches will be unavailable. Once running the charging system brings the battery voltage above the threshold and the Auxillary switches become available. If this happens consistently it could mean your battery is nearing end of life, it is not being driven often and long enough to be fully charged, or something is draining thd battery with the engine off.
Or the IBS sensor is bad. If the vehicle is driven just for a couple miles daily, the battery may not be getting fully charged. If you drive it for an hour or two and if you are still having the problem and the battery will pass the load test, more than likely it may be a bad IBS sensor.

If you have a smart AGM battery charger, charge your battery if you don't want to go for a drive. Just make sure that you connect the ground/negative battery charger cable to the negative battery terminal point before the in-line IBS sensor and not at the actual battery post after the IBS.

A bad IBS sensor would normally show some related DTCs no?

Ok I recently read a factory TSB that @alphawolff posted regarding IBS and charging that made me think otherwise. Maybe I misunderstood it.
I have the pdf but I’m having trouble posting it as an attachment. Maybe @THAW has it as well.

You said "normally show" and my reply was "No". That's not to say it does not happen.

In regard to the IBS Sensor .... Important is that when you hook up your battery charger/maintainer cables that you place the neg cable from the charger/maintainer at the proper locale so the IBS Sensor is in the loop so to speak. The neg connection not placed properly would leave you with an IBS Sensor not doing it's job... as if the IBS Sensor was bad.

While many here have known for years about the IBS Sensor, there are many other's on the forum are oblivious to the IBS Sensor.

Reality is it is best to hook up your battery tender / maintainer so the IBS Sensor is properly in the mix.

See attached Star file regarding IBS..

Just the other day a forum guy was spewing misinformation.... spewing something to the effect ..... to maintain a JL's dual battery system just hook up a battery tender/maintainer to the rear 12v power port, the OBDll port or to the Trailer wiring connector.

Reality is it is best to hook up your battery tender / maintainer so the IBS Sensor is properly in the mix.

Yep that’s the one. Perhaps I took the sentence out of context that said a replacement IBS is not required on a vehicle without DTCs. Anyway this is all above my pay grade. I’ll leave it to you and others more knowledgeable to discuss.

@Terrymo

I give you more credit then you give yourself! You are here often following forum posts, asking ?, etc. so you have and are absorbing so to speak lots of info.... thus you are quite knowledgeable.

Oh ....Another thing to know about the IBS Sensor is how to reset it... when it gets reset like during a 12v power kill, etc... and that the IBS Sensor needs to relearn just as if it had been replaced with a new IBS Sensor..

About the relearn... Whether with a newly installed IBS Sensor or with an existing IBS Sensor that was reset for whatever reason, do read about the relearn in the available Star Publication.

Yep I read all that. I try not to involve myself in topics that lead to others posting page long regurgitation of previous posts that devolve into name calling. I’m sure you get my meaning.

So, my update is obviously purely anecdotal. I've been on the software bandwagon since Ratzero's post #5 and #9 which made the most sense to me but even he was stating a possible issue with the sensor itself. Anyway, I was getting a reset to off every 3-5 days on average and now none since the update a month ago. Also, I have neither changed my driving habits nor played with any charging. It's my daily driver but I'm definitely not putting an hour of driving in a day. Maybe I should get on the ball with charging regardless if this is fixed in software. It probably wouldn't hurt.

Here's the current bulletin on IBS functionality and replacement protocol. TL;DR: If it doesn't throw a code, isn't loose, or isn't corroded, don't waste money replacing it.
