Attaching rock rails to the frame?

I want to build some heavy duty rock sliders and I’m contemplating on how to best attach them to my jeep.

the existing mounting points of the factory Rubi rails seems a bit flimsy so I want to go directly to the frame. the issue is I’m not sure the best way to go about it.

one thought is to use some of the existing holes in the frame and push a bolt all the way through to the other side. The holes that do go all the way through are spaced oddly

I could also potentially use the existing holes and bolt it to one but not go all the way through the frame with the bolt. But they’re not threaded and I’m not sure how I’d get a nut inside the frame and tighten it down

I’ve also thought about welding them to the frame. I’m not an amazing welder but I’m good enough I have no concern about the welding being strong enough. But my biggest worry there is frying some electrical components.

anyone run into the same issue or have any thoughts or ideas? Maybe I’m just missing something obvious here

why not just order a pair that are frame mounted. come w the hardware and not worry about that headache ?
LOD makes some really nice frame mounted ones. and many other vendors do too, that people on the forum use.

2 reasons,
Cheaper. I already have a bunch of scrap metal so I would be building these for nearly no cost. And second I want to challenge of making them

I’ll take a look at those and maybe try to find inspiration for how they’re mounted.

ah it looks like those use the smaller side bolts on the body mounts…. I thought about doing that, seems like the route I might just go

I have the LOD sliders, they bolt to the frame and have a cutout that allows access to the body mount bolts…..However when I installed my long arm kit, the cross member bracket and the forward slider mount needed the same spot on the frame…. Not wanting to go through the b.s. of finding something else, I just cut them and welded them on…..

those use the smaller bolts, next to the big ones..... which is why i liked them for mine.

Try downloading the white knuckle sliders install instructions to see if it helps you with some ideas.

Have a question for everyone that has welded rock rails to their frame. Should you want to lift your body off how do you intend to do that? I was thinking of welding receivers (like hitch receiver) to the frame which would allow the easier removal of the body should that need to happen.

I don’t plan on lifting the body off …. But just in case I need to access the body bolts I did make my braces so I can still get to them….

It sounds like a fun project. If I was building a set I would design & build them to bolt to the frame. I don't prefer to mess with body bolts, that's just me.

just started cutting everything today. I’ve definitely decided to bolt to the frame, I have a general idea of how I want to do it now based on seeing other products but still don’t have an exact plan.

I think it’s just gonna be one of those “take each step as it comes” type projects and I’ll figure it out as I go lol
