I'm hoping to get a small group together to do a trip down to Anza for the first weekend in December. I'll be camping Friday night (Dec 1st), wheeling on Saturday and possibly doing some BLM camping Saturday night as well.

My initial thought is to start at the Mud Caves area and drive north and check out Diablo Dropoff and then Sandstone Canyon and exit through Fish Creek.

I've never been to the Pumpkin Patch or Octillo Wells SVRA area though so that also might be an option.

Probably won't do Pinyon this time as that's a whole day event.

When: Saturday 12/2

Meetup Time: 830am

Meetup Spot: Google Map Link - S2 & Vallecito Creek Rd

Attendees:

@SadRobot
@GMONEY
@Mx5red
@Go1712
@Inkhero
@Blueliner3

I'm a solid maybe;)
I'll have my boys (prob wouldn't take the dog) so not sure how much I can commit to. Thinking at least day trip and maybe parlay that into camping, not sure if I could do both nights.

I've done that course, I'd say it's most of the day with some breaks/hiking. The mud caves were fun to explore.

I drove east from Julian down the S2 (or great southern overland stage route) past agua caliente and turn north on vallecito creek rd (32.9153083, -116.2406586). That turns east until a wide wash.
Then up arroyo tapiado road (32.8951470, -116.1794128) to the huge mud caves (actually on google maps). Then back east and up north on arroyo secco del Diablo rd (32.8809063, -116.1573553) through the canyon to turnoff east (32.9391886, -116.1899163) to Diablo dropoff. Easily went down the drop in my JTR. Then drive up north east through fish creek wash to split mountain rd to ocotillo wells.

I've done Fish Creek, Sandstone Canyon and Mud Caves. I never made it to Diablo dropoff though. I figured it would probably take all day which is why I'm leaning towards camping again Saturday night and heading out on Sunday morning.

I’m up for wheeling out there. Still need to get a tent, so camping is up in the air. Will be following this thread. Thanks.

Using @Mx5red 's coordinates I made this Gaia Map of the route:

If anyone wants to .gpx file for it let me know.

This would be a full day of wheeling right?

I most likely won't camp.if is only a day of wheeling as I'm only an hour+ from home.

If we do a second day of consider staying out.

I imagine some folks may want to do Pinyon on Sunday. I'm kind of undecided. Not sure if I want to pay about $43 for another night camping since BLM camping seems to be out. At the moment I'm leaning towards what I did last time and driving home Saturday night.

Pinyon is a good run for sure. I'll see how things progress towards that over the next couple days but might just do the one day as well.

I have never gone north past the mud caves, I backtracked then north on Arroyo Seco Del Diablo (32.8808410, -116.1575665 per google maps).
I’m assuming the route you show is perfectly passable??‍♂ btw the drive up through that road up to Diablo Dropoff is beautiful narrow slot canyon, I’m assuming just like Sandstone (haven’t been to sandstone canyon). My route was like this:

That is a full day. I’d love to do pinyon, though I’m not sure if it’d be smart to try turning this into a two day wheeling trip with my small boys?

I'm fine going either way. I've only gone as far as the mud cave area and had to turn around so I'm also not sure what is up that way.
