Hi all, my 2020 wrangler rubicon has been stuck at the dealer for almost 4 weeks, needs a new instrument cluster panel, it went blank. I was told it would be 3-5 days on the part so i approved the repair, then when i called to check on status they told me it was backordered and would be 3-4 weeks or more. I was told I should call FCA to expedite, which I did. They still won't give me an eta or tell me anything beyond saying they contacted the parts people and alternating for a response. Last night I found that there is a recall they went out in October for the instrument panel cluster for the screen going blank. I am guessing that is why the part is backordered, but I would really like to know if anyone has any experience with this and how long the part takes to ship? The dealer is not letting me take the vehicle as this cluster includes the odometer, so I have been renting a car for nearly 4 weeks already.

The dealership has no authority to keep you car. Tell them to put it back together ( if they have it apart) you are taking it back and they can call you when they get the part.

Actually, they do.

They cannot. Once it is known that the odometer is not working, the dealership cannot release the vehicle. They will not allow a customer to continue to drive any vehicle without a working instrument cluster and odometer.

Ok good info. Please let me know the appropriate section of the vehicle code or penal code that gives them the authority to do this. Cause as far as I know they’ve seized your property, so I’m sure you’re referring to some authority that they have would just be nice to know.

It's for safety and insurance reasons. There is no vehicle or penal code. The dealership cannot let the vehicle leave with an inoperable odometer. It is as simple as that.

The vehicle needs to stay as is so the mileage does not change. This is the mileage that must be programmed when the new instrument cluster is installed. Who's to say the vehicle owner will not drive for miles and miles if it is returned to them? If that is done the dealership has no way of verifying actual mileage of the vehicle.

They will have you cancel the order. The odometer is programmed at the factory, if one is ordered it must remain until it is installed due to an odometer discrepancy. While you are in your right to still pickup the vehicle, the warranty will be voided and the discrepancy will be noted on service history. This will, in turn, absolutely destroy your vehicle's value and make it more difficult to sell down the line. The dealership does not have the ability to program odometers in the U.S.

My shop doesn't order it until we can verify you're able to leave it with us. Some take 3-6 weeks to come in.

If you take the time to review the vehicle code, I believe the vehicle code states it is the owners responsibility when the vehicle is sold to report the correct mileage with the vehicle. So while a shop may think it is in everybody’s best interest to do this I don’t believe they have any legal authority to keep a person from picking up their vehicle if they choose to do so. As far as resale value goes and destroying the value of a vehicle, I believe as long as you accurately report the mileage when you sell it I don’t see that as a problem, but then again I’m not an expert in the area of odometers.

They had to replace the dash in my truck a number of years ago and put a new dash in it with the odometer set to zero. It will be my responsibility when I sell the vehicle to let the new owner know that the vehicle had X numbers of miles on it when the odometer was replaced.

So anyway, I understand we just disagree on this, but I was just trying to answer a question out there from a consumer perspective. And it would appear you’re looking at it from a shop perspective. But in reality, I believe the responsibility ultimately lies with the owner of the vehicle and proper reporting of the mileage.

enjoyed chatting with you about this. Take care.

My jeep has been at the dealership for 2 months now. I have made several phone calls to Chrysler customer care and just keep getting the same answers. After lots of research and finally getting in touch of a Chrysler zone representative I found out that they don’t have the clusters. What they are doing is taking the defective clusters and sending them to a 3rd party vendor to be reconditioned. This is causing the delay. I also found out that if they have your Jeep for more than a week they will pay $60 a day towards a rental vehicle but they won’t tell you that. You have to keep calling and complaining to customer care to get the rental. I spoke to them today and the ETA for my cluster is end of march. Luckily I have a spare vehicle but it’s still very inconvenient not having my Jeep.

Isn't the mileage stored on the PCM? I would pick up the Jeep and tell them to call me. Nobody wants to pay for a vehicle to just sit at the dealer.

since the cluster doesn’t show the mileage among other things like gas, temp, etc. the dealership is required to hold the vehicle due to DOT requirements. It’s a safety issue. But to answer your question, the mileage gets programmed into the new cluster.

First I've heard of a dealer following DOT requirements. Usually I get a vehicle back with a new issue they created.

Well, that’s interesting information. Would you please let me know the DOT regulation that requires that. I was very involved in those types of incidents for a number of years and that’s news to me. I will say DOT has volumes of operational directives, so it would be good to know where that lies

And sorry to hijack your thread. I see a lot of information posted on the Internet. That is what somebody told somebody who told somebody. I hate to see any kind of misinformation out there, especially where it involves a mechanic shop or dealership seizing a vehicle and it ends up costing the consumer fair amount of money for a rental car. It’s always good to dig to the bottom of these things to find out what’s reality and what is urban legend
