I was driving my 2018 Jeep JLUR just fine all day. I went to Costco, came back home and turn off the engine to unload my groceries. The min that's done (which was about 10-15mins), I wanted to head back out to pick up my kids and the Jeep won't start. All electric and dash is on, but it won't crank. I scan through this forum and a lot of people pointed to the batteries. At this point, I try starting the Jeep about 3 times so when I tested the batteries, both show about 12.2 volts. I went ahead and bought new batteries and changed both batteries anyway just to see what happen, but the problem still persist. I had it towed to the dealership and today, they told me I have a failed Starter.

My question is, how can a starter malfunction? Did I just got a bad starter from manufacturer, or did I do something to cause it? Can low or dead batteries cause a starter to fail?

How many miles do you have on your Jeep? Do you use your auto start/stop at red lights? Do you offroad in water? The one on our JK lasted over 200K miles but a starter only "has" to last 36K miles.

I have about 55k miles. Yes, I do use the stop/stop. I’ve learn to ignore it.
no, I have not been off-roading.

three of my previous cars were 200k miles or more before owning the Jeep and I haven’t encounter a starter failing so I’m just wondering if I got a bad starter or I’ve did something to cause it to fail. Or some other component on the Jeep is causing it.

Think of each time the start/stop uses the starter as an additional day in the Jeep's starter's life. If in your previous cars the starter was used once a day and 200K miles. Now you use the auto start/stop 4 times a day so when you times that by 55K miles it puts you over 200K miles.

If that didn't make sense here is another way to look at it.
- Assume you start once a day and drive 10 miles a day. After 200K miles the starter was used 20,000 times.

- Assume that you start and use the auto start/stop 4 times a day and drive 10 miles. After 55K miles the starter was used 5,500 x 4 = 22,000 times.

This has always bothered me about start stop. Starters have a finite life span and using it 4 5 or even more times a day to start the engine seems like it would lower that life span.

Yep. One of the advantages of the e-Torque version, it only uses the starter at the initial start and not with each start/stop. In my older JL (before I got the Tazer) and in my other cars I press the ignition button and then then the "Avenger" button soon after to turn off the start/stop to save the wear and tear on my starter.
