So, I'm 6 months out from the end of my lease and starting to daydream about what’s next. I still love driving my 4xe every day and, most importantly, know its ins/outs and that it has been one of the good ones. Despite a fairly ridiculous buyout, I’m tempted to do it because it’s a known entity. No small deal with a 4Xe!

What’s my hesitation? The unknown. If sh$t hits the fan and the battery degrades over time without a cost effective solution, I’m left with a 4 banger, heavy AF JLU. Thinking I’ll be better of giving it back and spending that money on a diesel for a better long term Jeep?

I would not keep a 4XE beyond a lease term. Long term unknowns make it undesirable.

Financially best to just lease another of course, unless ?? money is a hobby of yours then enjoy. Have you driven a 24?

New SS battery tech could be production about the time the next lease runs out…… But- the diesel is a good engine with the potential to be a very good engine. If you live where I think you do the “upgrades” could be done and what I would get.

That validates my thinking and burning money is, most definitely, not a hobby!

The hybrid system has a 10-8 year warranty, and you know this particular vehicle, vs buying something someone gave up, especially a diesel, why would someone buy a diesel Wrangler only to give it up, a diesel Wrangler isn't one of the powertrains you would buy by on a whim.

From the looks of things the odd problematic 4xe appears to have issues within a few thousand miles of purchase.

If the battery degrades during that 10-8 year period you get a new battery under warranty.

I'm 2+ years with 7+ years left of hybrid warranty, but I'm saving a boat load of money not using gas, conservatively, that's $3,500 a year x 10 years that's $35k at year 10.

The only thing what would really give me pause in your situation, is if the buyout is higher than the resale value, maybe you can deal them down on the buy out if they are upside down.

Fair points. This is why I go back and forth. I really enjoy driving the hybrid for the extra power and top off silent driving. On the diesel point- there’s always someone who decides they aren’t a Jeep person!

There is always the option to risk to return the 4xe and then reacquire/negotiate, no?

If the buy option you have in your contract is way over market they won’t get that money anyway.

you must have a really short commute(?). It’s only got 25 miles on a charge right? My commute is less than 5 miles and I doubt a 4xe would ever same me enough $$ on gas to compensate for the added 4xe cost. I fill up
About once a month give or take.

I don't commute any more, but I do around 700 miles a month at $6+ a gallon and 15 mpg.

Before 2022 I was doing a lot more so usually was $400-$450 gas a month with my previous Wranglers.

Year 1 with the 4xe I did 13,000 miles.

All my driving is city core, so i was always 14-15mpg.

So yea if you don't do a bit of driving on expensive gas, it doesn't make much sense savings wise.

Also 2021 and 2022 the Sahara 4xe was the same price as a 2.0T.

2023/2024 the 4xe is $4,000 more than the regular, but also 2021 vs 2024 Sahara 4xe is $63k vs $80k

Canadian dollars, Toronto also doesn't get that insane tax incentives like the US, Quebec and BC I think get about $7K-$10k.

We bought because our driving habits aren't lease friendly. We have enjoyed this Jeep immensely-to the point where a non-4xe rental felt like a complete dud. Before you make a final decision, drive a few ICE models to see if they can give you the same giggle factor.

@lindaspins that's a good call. I've had a few other Jeeps(TJ's and a YJ) so the JLU feels great.....I should compare it to another modern Jeep.
