I have a subwoofer sitting in my basement collecting dust.
Is it a simple 'add amp and sub' deal to the upgraded alpine in my JL?

Depending on the aftermarket amp you have, it might be as easy as you can make it. I will admit that there are a few opinions on how to get the signal to the sub amp but that will be determined by which OEM setup you have.

You would need a line out conerter. I have used an AmpPro when I did my Quart install.

I have the 8.4 upgraded alpine system, with stock subwoofer. Don't know much other than that.

I would want to add a kicker Mono amp, and my kicker subwoofer.

Ideally you would pull signal from the OEM sub and feed it into the Kicker amp. Depending on which Kicker amp, you might need an LOC. This way you'll get the same signal going to both subs. If you decide to tap onto the rear speakers you run the risk of getting a different signal to each of the subs.

What's LOC?

Line output convertor, basically it takes speaker level in, and converts it to an RCA that most aftermarket amps need for input. Some amps will have an onboard LOC (it could be as simple as four terminals or a plug in pigtail). I would look for a quality amp from JL, Audio Control, RF, Kicker, Arc. Alpine, Kenwood, etc that will include the option. This is all necessary because the OEM Alpine does not offer an RCA output from factory.
