New to the forums, but have lurked for a while. I've searched through various threads but have come up empty in my search for a way to identify the auto 4WD transmission.

I am looking at used JL Wrangler Unlimited's which will have the Selec-Trac III transmission within in, this isn't an easy option to find without really a picture of the shifter as far as I am aware. So far to narrow the search I am looking at Sahara, Sahara Altitudes only with the 2.0L turbo inline 4.

Besides those, and then clicking into each, is there a VIN code way to identify the transmission option easily?

Thanks,

To clarify, you are looking for the Transfer Case, not the trans.

It'll be on the window sticker. Paste VIN in after the "="

The select trac has CV axles instead of u joints.
Yes, not a problem for the vehicles use case.

There is a very large difference in handling between full time 4wd and auto 4x4 on the road during the winter. I tend to not engage the 4H at all as I don't want to put the stress on the transfer case even though it's probably slick enough to let the tires slip as needed.

@Jtphoto is saying that's how you can tell from the outside of the Jeep. The CVs have boots, so if there are boots in the front axle "c's" you know it's got it.

Ahh, that makes sense. Difficult to see those when only browsing online but will certainly watch out for the difference.

Does the Willy's extreme Recon Package with 35's have that package also?

Shopping online isn’t easy.

On interior pictures, try and zoom-in on the left cluster or transfer case shifter and spot it. You are absolutely right that the difference on slippery surfaces is night and day. My jeep has it and is by far the most competent wrangler I’ve ever driven in a winter storm.

When I ordered my XR the select- trac was only available as an option in the Sahara or Rubicon
