Admin update: this recall affects 2026 model year Jeep Wranglers

August 13, 2026
FCA Recall # 78D
NHTSA Recall # 26V-531
Safety Defect/Non Compliance Description and Safety Risk

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 571.111 S6.2.6 requires that "The rear visibility system default to the rearview image being visible and meet the requirements of FMVSS No. 571.111 S6.2.1 (field of view) and S6.2.2 (image size) at the beginning of each backing event, regardless of any modifications to the field of view that the driver had previously selected..." and apply to other markets via direct reference to FMVSS or are implied via free trade agreements. Suspect vehicles may not display the rearview image during a backing event. The suspect radio software may prevent the rearview image from displaying in a backing event. Failure to display a rearview image can increase the risk of a crash.

Repair Description

FCA will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles to update the radio software. Vehicles will be updated either via firmware Over-The-Air, if capable/available, or via USB at the dealer.

Recall Overview
  • NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V-531
  • Manufacturer Recall Number: 78D (FCA US LLC)
  • Component Affected: Rear Visibility / Backup Camera Software (FMVSS 111)
  • Safety Risk: The rearview camera image may not display upon shifting into reverse, increasing the risk of a backing crash or striking a pedestrian.
What You Should Do
  • Check your specific vehicle's status or active safety campaigns by entering your 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA Recalls Database.
  • Authorized dealerships will perform necessary software updates or corrections free of charge.

Here's what I've found:

The defect traces to radio software that can keep the rearview camera feed from showing on the central screen when you select reverse. You suddenly lose the wide-angle view behind the vehicle and have to rely on mirrors and direct sightlines, which can be stressful in tight parking lots or crowded driveways.

I wonder if it's related to the various crap that people in newer Wranglers complain about taking over the display.

I'm thinking it's related to the Safety Group, which I have.

And I'm glad I have it, because my senses and reflexes aren't what they used to be.

so sick of " safety rearview camera issues" learn to move your damn head.. if you can move your head in the range of motion to look around your vehicle before reversing you shouldnt be driving. You should be seeing a Physical therapist to help you move your neck. I believe 100% all the new safety features have caused more distracted driving and incidents than they have helped.. I believe people need to be held accountable and stop relying on cameras. UGH!. I cant count the times i had someone almost reverse into me walking in a parking lot. the answer is always " I didnt see you in the camera" yea. you're right... turn you bleeping head an look left and right before reversing... end of rant. i suggest the recall be to remove all the damn cameras.

Dude, I completely agree. I watch so many people back up using only the camera. They almost always back out in front of someone cause they didn't see. They wait for all these alarms to tell them it's safe. You turn around, and use your mirrors to back. The camera is designed to keep you from backing over something or a child that happened behind you on accident, and to see how close you are to something when in a tight area. People have become lazy and too fat to turn around.

Cameras were intended to be used IN ADDITION to one's own senses. Too bad people are lazy, but there's no going back now unless you like accidents.
