I wheel this thing hard, most of the time with a rooftop tent and often loaded up to max GVWR

At 32,000 miles, my tires are on track to hit the wear bars at 50,000.

The ‘excessive tire wear‘ story is just that. Two loops around the country might be a small commute, for some.

Lifetime mileage so far a fraction over 21MPG per Fuelly.

We will see what falls off of it during the unlimited mileage warranty period. I hope the semi-trained monkeys get more practice on the 4xe by then.
I'm not exactly sure why they make the 4xe weight is an issue, when the 392 weights about the same, and that weight is all up in front.

I actually just took advantage of the ability to lease and get the credit upfront. I'm planing on buying it out at about 6 months

New 4XE owner here, and first Jeep so can't answer all of your questions.

In answer to question 3., I was expecting to buy outright, but the IRS decided 2024 Wranglers didn't qualify for the full $7500 EV credit. That tax credit is actually a two part deal and 4XE's do qualify for half the credit of $3750. The dealership finance guy said they can apply the full $7500 discount to a lease, plus there was another $2500 or so credit from the state of CA, or somewhere else, so as a CA resident you might check into that. For a $10k discount I went for the lease, and was told many buyers do that, then pay off the lease early.

Re Q2., You will lose a few inches in length of cargo space due to the fold up rear seat bottoms, and maybe around 8 inches in height, but just over the folded forward seat backs. I've even figured out how to fit a sleeping platform for one inside without removing any of the seats, as long as I can get by with 74" in length!

One of the 4XE pluses for me is the 120v power box. I expect to use a high wattage induction cooktop and a coffee maker when out camping, and that big battery should last several days if I arrive using e-save. Plus, although not very efficient, that turbo charged generator sitting under the hood can be used to recharge the EV battery if need be!

Here's another angle to consider...

You said, "I love my stick shift JLU sport", and, "Judging how the world is moving".

Well, I think it's safe to say things aren't moving THAT fast. If you're truly a Jeep enthusiast, who foresees owning more of them in their future, why not purchase another drivetrain that offers a manual, such as a Rubicon, or the newest version of Willys (that's basically a Rubi lite)?

I'd consider buying a manual equipped conventional drivetrain next (while you still can), and postponing the 4Xe until later...
Its obvious Jeep is committed to 4Xe, and hell, it will likely be even better then!

Just a thought ?

Look at the source; it’s just the latest trend in virtue-signaling from those with an anti-PHEV agenda.

If it were truly an issue, the millions of overweight pickups on the road used for mall and grocery runs would be dealing with it already.

If I kept waiting for a "better " Wrangler I would still be driving my 88 YJ.

Going through the years every Wrangler I bought offered something better than the previous.

The only time there was a hiccup, was going from the 99 TJ to the 07 JK, the tumble front seats were sorely missed,. and so was the rainfall gauge on the dashboard, at least it came back in the JK mid cycle refresh, but then they took it away again in the 4xe.

They knocked $12k off the window invoice right up front, for me. That included the full IRS $7500 kickback plus the 5% discount I negotiated before placing the order, and the remainder was the mysterious state, or maybe some other federal discount available to corporations (meaning the lease company, I expect).

Good idea on waiting six months to buy out, as that gives time to see if it turns into lemonade. I'm still debating with self on just going the whole 36 months or not, as I have set aside the residual buy-out cost and all future lease payments while making a safe 5% return. Not sure what interest rate is built into the lease, but the difference would be what I might save by buying out early.

Keep an eye on autotrader, you can find 4xe's at a good price with low miles. Definitely check oil change intervals on any hybrid.

Agreed.

If they ever make a non plug-in hybrid Wrangler, I'll be the first one in line!

Sign me up for a 38 MPG Wrangler! 700 mi to a tank! ?
I'd even take a 30mpg hybrid wrangler lol. I'd love the same setup as the 4xe, just put a smaller battery under the seat. Something where the range would be enough to cover speeds under 20 mph.
