I’ve seen a couple other threads on this, but none answered the question I had. I have a 5 mile commute, so I plan to be like 90% electric-only mode with my Jeep. During the 300 mile break-in, should I avoid that and do hybrid or e-save mode to run the gas engine more, or does the power to the engine not matter, just that it’s running?

I ran through my first tank of gas for the break-in, but that was easy because I had a 350 mile trip back home from the selling dealer. Had I not had that trip, I would have just put it in e-save every time I drove until I hit 300 miles, following the procedures outlined in the owner's manual.

Edit to add: or just take a nice trip over a weekend to knock out the first 300 miles.

I don't know that I'd specifically run the engine in 5 mile increments for break in. I'd think longer runs at temp would be preferable.

A 5 mile commute is bad for break in. With the 4xe it can switch from electric only to the gas engine under full load with the IC being stone cold. Not sure if one of the buttons can disable this. Also the 300 miles would take forever with only 0.5 miles on the IC engine each trip.

A 300 mile highway trip is perfect for break in. Don't idle the engine more than absolutely necessary.

Right, I’d read that. It just doesn't make any mention of what driving mode it should be in. I didn’t know if it mattered.

My drive home is about 70 miles, and I planned to take country highways going back at around 45 mph, occasionally doing some speeding up and slowing down without taking the engine temps too high. When I got back, I just didn't know if I needed to hold off on electric-only mode for going to work or use hybrid mode. Or should I be doing eSave mode to only use the gas engine for the first 300 miles? I think my plan is to do hybrid mode and take slightly longer trips to and from work on different types of roads, but if electric-only will cut it, I'd rather save the gas and do that.

My recommendation would be to use electric on the short trips, then esave charge on the long ones.

That way you make sure the engine is getting up to temp during the process. Cold starts normally cause the most wear.

Electric keeps from firing the ICE more than hybrid does. Esave charge will prevent start/stop at lights.

Driving from Gupton? I got mine there and drove it home - it was a 130-mile trip for me. I ran in Hybrid until it switched over to the ICE and kept it below 65MPH on I65. Then it was just regular trips around town. I would leave it in hybrid and it would swap over when it needed to. Got a little over 5000 miles on it now.

Either way they are fun to drive!

I may have part of my trip on I-65 too. I’ll be driving from Tullahoma back up to Nashville. I’d usually take I-24 but plan to take the state highways back up in order to go slower and vary my speeds a little more. I was going to do Hybrid mode back. As I’ve said, my commute is 5 miles, but my wife has a 16 mile commute. My dad suggested that I just let her drive my car for the first couple weeks for the break in, but I don’t think I’m going to do that, as excited as she got about the prospect.
