Just did a hard wire radar detector mount in the Jeep. I am using an Escort Redline and its been an excellent detector. I got some short wire leads with the RJ11 jacks and the nice braided sheath. They have an inline fuse built into them but I didn't use it. More on that later! I drilled a hole in the mirror surround to run it through a grommet. I tied a knot in the wire on the inside of plastic surround piece so if the detector falls it wouldn't rip the wires out.
The rest of the wire going to the power source is a flat ribbon type. I tapped into the ignition wire thats bundled in with the the 4 accessory switch wires under the passenger dash. The circuit it is on is a 10 amp circuit. The flat ribbon wire had a 1 amp fuse for the detector requirement. So instead of using the 1 amp fuse thats wired into the short braided leads I used. I cut that in line fuse out and used the ribbon wire fuse down near the power source. I didn't want to take that concoction apart behind the mirror cover where its soldered up nice, to do micro surgery on those small wires for a non replaceable fuse. They are a one shot deal.
Thats pretty much it. I will say that the radar detector mount to the glass is modded. I have had so many detectors fall off of the sticky mounts when the window gets hot or cold. I cut the suction cup part off and JB welded a metal disc to the plastic. Then used 3M VHB tape and fixed it to the windshield. It looks factory and it wont come off. It is removable if you take 5 minutes and some fishing line to cut behind it. Other wise it will hold like a mirror on a car window basically.
