I appreciate that, should I also be replacing the oil pressure/temp sensors in the back of that housing or do they come with the new unit?

None... but it pays well.

Unit comes with filter and cap only. Sensors are needed or can be swapped in from existing.

You can re-use the sensor, especially if you have low miles. What I would recommend changing is the short hose from the oil filter housing back side. Buy an OEM hose that has the correct molded shape.

Change the spark plugs while you’re in there. Replace the intake gaskets. They’re cheap.

Hey, when you were doing this install and the cover seals did you ever come across this teeny tiny green o ring? I had a parts back order for many months and finally got around to finishing the job. I cannot recall where it came from. I placed it separate from everything else so it wouldn’t get lost, but I’ve managed to come across some severe brain loss.

Thanks!

OEM comes with sensors. You really just need the gaskets, not the whole unit

Probably around the part that sticks *into* the block. Has a small o-ring around it like that

Those colored O-rings are usually on sensors. It may also be from an aftermarket oil filter tip.

Sometime before 2024 models but I think after 2022, there was an important revision to the Oil Filter Housing. This change was implemented on the 2024 JT engine I installed last year. It had a different production part number, but it was physically the same as the over the counter repair part 68596318AB that has superseded the earlier part number. There is also a part 68596317AB with 2 sensor ports for the JK. Neither part now comes with the sensors, or at least as of the last time someone bought them on another forum.

The change to both of these parts is between the cooler and the filter housing. The old "figure 8" seals are replaced by separate seals and the housing mold has incorporated a solid web between the oil and adjacent coolant ports in the two locations. I discovered this when investigating why my oil had coolant in it.

The oil pressure breaches the seals and pushes into the coolant port. When the engine is shut down, the oil pressure subsides to zero pressure and the coolant system pressure remains at normal operating pressure until it cools (15-18 psi), which pushes coolant into the oil system.

The new style housing and seals prevent this exchange of coolant and oil back and forth.

The pictures below are of my old OEM 2018 JL oil filter housing and the replacement I bought in early 2024. It's a subtle, but important change, IMO.

Hey folks, this seems to be a good JLU DIY video:

Now, I'm not sure I want to tackle this job myself, and as I just recently discovered this issue on my wife's 2018 JLU, I'm starting research on the scope of this issue.

So far I think all I am seeing is oil drips on the floor? What is the ultimate risk here besides keeping an eye on oil level?

Is there a risk of catastrophic sudden oil loss? Oil/coolant mixing?

Just trying to get an idea on how urgent it is to get this addressed.

(sorry if this was the wrong thread to post in, but it was right on top of the page when I logged in, lol)

I don't think its a "gotta do it this weekend" job. But, don't put it off for months.

After you remove the old housing, zip the cooler off of the housing and inspect the seals for the leak between the oil and coolant ports. Please post your pix. Not many people have investigated this when they replace these.

Ironically I’m almost in the exact same situation, my wife drives hers everyday extensively for her job. So it’ll be a Saturday job (hopefully) when I finally decide to get the parts and tackle this

A first timer, that is fairly experienced, should have no trouble doing this job on a Saturday. The issues most have complained about are the electrical connectors and the fuel line connection. Read up on those two and I think you'll be fine.

👍

What is the consensus of the forum, use the Dorman product or stick with latest OE part?
