I wouldn't mind getting the JL Jeep kit. It would be nice to have a kit specific for my JLU. I just need to justify the cost. If it were cheaper I'd be all over it.

I really hate the term overpriced, but it applies i this case. If one knows tools well enough, a similar tool roll can be assembles for about 1/3 the cost.

You will have to do it using Taiwan made tools though, many of which are high quality and lifetimes guaranteed. The tools in the OEM/Mopar roll are likely made by Apex, Stanley or similar company with factories in Taiwan.

Now, for the convenience factor, selling this tool roll for around $250 would probably work for many. There are just so many better ways to spend nearly $500 on hand tools. I’m going to guess that sales will not be brisk on this tool roll.

Around $250? I'd be in in a flash. If nothing else for the novelty and practicality of someone else having done the work for me figuring out what I really need. I tend to carry too many trail tools.

This is not $40 at Harbor Freight or no matter where you shop. Even their cheapest tools. And HF has some decent tools.

There's a Harbor Freight in our town. I love HF. A lot of my tools are from HF (but I try and avoid the electrical tools - stick with the hand tools).

Now the price is up to $475. I won't be buying these anytime soon.

I’m OK with HF for (a) things that aren’t mission critical, (b) things that I’m only likely to need once, and (c) things that don’t have moving parts.

I absolutely appreciate the time it takes to craft a tool bag that doesn't include the kitchen sink, and the effort to source quality tools for production runs in the thousands. That said, my personal experience doing field repairs on bridges, boats, barges, beaches, and mud holes has also given me a great appreciation for cheaper tools in places they are likely to get lost or abused. A garage is a great place for high-quality, expensive tools, but for the half-flooded trail, I go with painlessly replaceable when lost.

I have these. The wrench set I feel like was cheaper than $90, and the other set was from Menards for like $30. Plus a few other tools I threw in. I’m under $200, or less than half that fancy Jeep set.

I guess I’m missing Allen keys but a nice set is like another $15-20.

I was curious how much difference there would be between the Mopar kit and building a cheaper version on my own. If choosing some of the below alternatives listed in the Poor Man’s kit, like I would probably do, you can easily add over $100 to the $235 total. Now I am looking at $335+, leaving less than a $110 difference between the Poor Man’s toolkit and the Mopar-Jeep brand kit. BTW, for the $110 difference I didn’t even include more expensive alternatives like the Gearwrench combination wrench set. Rather in that case I included the HF + Husky alternative instead of the cheap Amazon combo wrench set. Bottom line for me, the Mopar kit looks like a decent deal.

Oh, and I almost forgot, this does not include a tool roll-up bag. I did a quick search on Amazon and couldn’t find something similar, but figured this one might do the job: “EGARNGY Tool Roll Up Bag, 3 Big Tool Pouches, 14-pocket Wrench Organizer, 2 Small Storage Bag” for $36, so that closes the gap to around $74.

I would be curious to see what others come up with.

Cheers

These kits are flying off the shelves.

Sarcastic or serious? if you’re being serious what are you basing this on? Not being argumentative just genuinely curious. Thanks.

No seriously they can’t keep them in stock so someone is buying them. I bought one myself. Nice kit if you ask me??. Jeep won’t produce them for ever so get em’ while they’re hot.

Me too - I'm curious. Really? Lots of folks are buying these tool kits?

I like the set. I have a lot of automotive tools already, that I bought randomly when I needed them, but this is a good primary set to drive around with. It's well designed, manufactured, and surprisingly heavy. It was on backorder for a week when I ordered it and the dealership service rep seemed very surprised that I wanted it, due to the price.
